I am currently a 3rd-year Biomedical Science student, studying in Leicester and graduating this January. I've worked with kids from all ages in activity camps throughout the UK. The lessons will be based on ensuring a strong basic scientific foundation, acknowledge and addressing weaker aspects and then building on this foundation to create a broad understanding of biology.
I prefer talking and discussing biology with the aid of books along with other literature, allowing for questions and queries to be asked openly by the student. I find this creates an open, friendly and enjoyable atmosphere for both tutor and student.
I have taught languages, history and science before as an external talker at community events or summer camps. Here I have addressed hundreds of people, giving me the tools to teach one on one to the best of my ability. I also have had a tutor for science, which makes it easier to relate to the students. This also helps me be flexible, for example I know one teaching style may not suit everyone and knowing this allows me to try different things. I also know what works as a tutor and what does not, for example, 1 hour of the tutor reading from a textbook will not help at all, I know this from experience as it did not help me. However, a friendly, interactive and informative tutor showed me how helpful tutoring can be.
