First-class English Literature graduate offering English Literature and Language lessons in Milton Keynes

Methodology

Given my recent degree achievement, I am more than capable (and confident) to tutor students up to the age of 18, however I have most experience with younger students (aged 9-14 years). I usually spend the first lesson getting to know the student and their capabilities and listening to what they believe are the weaknesses they wish to work on (with younger students, this has often been with their parents/guardians who relay information from their school teachers). I tend to then devise topic areas we should work on specifically, using worksheets and various exercises to see which works best for the particular student. I have found, from experience (particularly with my younger students) that a reward system works well and ensures focus is maintained throughout the lesson. This has included star charts with rewards at certain markers and incentives to ensure the student's concentration remains constant. I am patient and a good listener, and I try to keep lessons fun and engaging throughout. I am also extremely adaptable and open to suggestions from students if they prefer working using a particular method or technique.

Background

I graduated from the University of Birmingham this year (2018) with First-Class Honours in English Literature with Theatre Studies. Throughout my degree, I have tutored several students aged 9-14 years, assisting with work towards their 11+, advancing their comprehension skills and ensuring they achieve their full literacy potential. My students have all excelled in their 11+ and have often moved up a set in their English classes as a result.
