Flute and music theory lessons, recent MMus graduate from the RNCM in Manchester

Methodology

I have recently completed a Master of Music at the Royal Northern College of Music and prior to this an undergraduate degree in music at the University of Bristol. Since starting university I have been teaching privately and have four years experience working in specialist music schools.

I am passionate about inspiring people of all ages to strive for their best in music. I believe in creating an environment that is fun and engaging, while ensuring that individuals are satisfied – whatever their goals. This might mean that we work towards graded exams or set different aims; I am happy with both approaches. I believe good technique on the instrument is essential and structure my lessons accordingly, starting with warm-ups and exercises before moving on to pieces.

I teach mainly classical flute and music theory but also have experience in folk/traditional flute and chamber music coaching.

I am happy to travel to students' homes to teach, and teach throughout Manchester. Travel is free of charge providing it is within cycling distance!

Background

Since starting university seven years ago I have been teaching privately and have four years experience working in specialist music schools. I have experience preparing students for ABRSM exams, both theoretical and practical, with high success rates. Through my work as a practice assistant I have spent time researching practice techniques and have encouraged pupils to think critically about their practice and how they structure it. As the majority of a student's work on their instrument is done outside their weekly lessons, I believe it is incredibly important to encourage the development of an inquisitive mind and a positive attitude towards practice.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching music privately since I began university in 2010. Since leaving university I have worked at the Purcell School of Young Musicians where I was a practice supervisor, taught music theory, and coached chamber music. Upon moving to Manchester I became a practice assistant at Chetham's School of Music. I also have an interest in music outreach and work for Artis Education, leading holistic arts workshops in schools. Alongside this I teach in a primary school in South Manchester and have private pupils. I also have experience teaching adults through my work on an adult amateur flute course in Scotland.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an enhanced DBS certificate
