My teachers have greatly inspired me in a variety of different ways; I hope to pass some of that inspiration to you!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical Flute from beginner to Grade 8 standard and beyond. I cover relevant elements of music theory as we go along.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I was awarded a distinction in my Dip ABRSM teaching diploma. In addition, I have a performance diploma from Trinity College, London: LTCL. I also have a law degree!
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 for an hour's lesson and £18 for 30 minutes. I may charge a small additional amount to cover the costs of travelling to lessons away from my home, depending on the distance.
- Where do you teach?
I can teach at my home. Alternatively, I am able to travel to give lessons at pupils' homes in the Abingdon, Wantage, Witney, Faringdon area of Oxfordshire. I am happy to teach in schools. I also am able to attend pupils' workplaces to teach them in the lunch hour (subject of course to a suitable room being available!); through stimulating different parts of the brain, focusing on music is a wonderful way to relax and return refreshed for an afternoon's work.
- When are you available?
Please contact me to discuss the most convenient times for lessons.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach children (once they have their front adult teeth) and adults. I teach beginners up to grade 8 or beyond.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
There is no pressure or requirement to enter any exams; for some pupils, exams provide a useful goal, but others prefer not to follow an exam path. If pupils would like to take an exam, I prepare them for the ABRSM exams.
- What kind of experience do you have?
Significant performance experience, in many orchestras and ensembles in London and the South-East. I currently play with Oxford Symphony Orchestra (co-principal) and Isis Chamber Orchestra (with whom I recently performed a concerto). Other performing includes principal flute in charity performances at Glyndebourne (Magic Flute), Sadler's Wells (Carmen) and Opera Holland Park (Oklahoma!). For many years, I was principal flute with the Kingston Chamber Orchestra and New Harmonie, a wind ensemble with an extensive outreach programme, in addition to its concert schedule. With New Harmonie, I was involved in many workshops in special schools, hospitals and residential homes, working closely with participants using the medium of music to stimulate and relax, and improve the quality of their lives. These included several series of workshops in special schools where, as a quartet or quintet, we worked with predominantly primary age children over a period of six weeks, creating a music drama which the children and we then performed to their parents.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
I have studied with Katey Thomas, Ingrid Culliford and (most recently) Julian Sperry. I have also performed in master classes with Michael Cox and Kate Hill.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Current pupils include: a teenager who travels from mid-Wales for lessons with me; an adult learner who took her first ever music exam with me - grade 5 flute with merit, followed more recently by grade 6 with distinction; a 12 year old who is very proud of her recent grade 1 distinction; another 12 year old who plays very enthusiastically but currently has no desire to take any exams; and a 10 year old who was recently awarded a music scholarship to her senior school. Meanwhile, a fond farewell to one of my pupils whom I took from grade 2 through grade 8 and who is now studying at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music.

I found Rachel's lessons extremely enjoyable and also very thorough. She not only taught me well during the lessons but also taught me how to listen better to what I play in order to improve my playing while not having a lesson. She combined technical skills and exercises with pieces to keep my interest and enthusiasm. Rachel was reliable, always arrived promptly for lessons and was flexible about re-arranging lessons when needed. I would have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone.
My 11-year-old daughter loves her lessons with Rachel. Rachel has a lovely manner with children and is able to communicate her considerable musical abilities and expertise to them successfully. She is thorough, reliable, intelligent, flexible and, while having high standards, makes learning the flute fun and rewarding. My daughter finds her very encouraging and helpful and says that Rachel always has a useful technique up her sleeve to help if she finds a new skill tricky to acquire. I recommend her highly.
