To me, the value of private tuition is the ability to approach the topic at hand in a way which perfectly suits the individual student; this may not be as easy in a classroom setting with up to thirty students needing attention. Sometimes, there may be so little in the way of a student fully understanding a topic, but this issue may never be properly addressed in a larger classroom. I aim for my tutoring to find these areas of confusion or frustration, and address them with empathy, understanding, and patience.
I graduated with a first class BA in English from the University of Birmingham in 2019 and am awaiting the final results for my Forensic Linguistics MA. I have also been accepted onto the University of East Anglia's Creative Writing MA for 2021. I have experience volunteering with the charity Action Tutoring, where I tutored two GCSE students who would otherwise have been unable to afford private tuition. During these sessions, we worked on creative writing, poetry analysis, and persuasive writing, as well as grammar and spelling.
I am a highly enthusiastic and adaptable individual who thrives when helping others deepen their understanding and enjoyment of English Literature. Having completed my master’s dissertation in Forensic Linguistics in October 2020, I am seeking tutoring opportunities, to which I believe my focused and patient nature would be best suited.

University Experience: Forensic Linguistics MA
My university experience has provided me with an analytical approach to my work and research. Having developed my skills in data management and qualitative research during my BA in English Language and Literature, my master’s degree in Forensic Linguistics has provided me with a fascinating area through which to harness these skills. I have learnt about the numerous ways analysis of language can benefit the justice system, from investigating police discourse, to evaluating the best statistical models for forensic voice comparison. I undertook both group and independent projects, which included exploring linguistic, persuasive techniques in the context of suicide coercion, and the language of domestic abuse victims, with the aim of improving the police’s understanding of these victims.
I also completed a dissertation on the use of pejoratives online. For this project, I taught myself the basics of the programming language R and used the Twitter API to scrape for tweets, using this data to perform a corpus analysis. This was a highly rewarding experience which allowed me both to utilise and strengthen my skills in linguistic analysis and online research, while also learning new skills.
Work and Volunteer Experience:
During university I was a volunteer with Action Tutoring. I was responsible for tutoring GCSE students with their English work. This involved planning weekly sessions focussing on areas they found most difficult, such as poetry analysis and essay structure. Not only has this experience bolstered my patience and perseverance, but it has also improved my organisational skills.
I also volunteered as an editorial assistant for the newspaper Redbrick during my time at the University of Birmingham, which involved proof-reading articles. This has helped me work more quickly and efficiently while still being detail-oriented, as the newspaper has strict deadlines. I take immense pleasure in proof-reading, because it allows me to help provide clarity and cohesion to people’s work.
