I’ve had the best outcomes by teaching through encouraging students to visualise and form ideas themselves (with hints if necessary) and thinking of mathematics as a way of describing the real world before formalising them. From my previous years experience I try to stop future misconceptions through careful wording. I try hard to tailor all problems I set to the interests of students.
I teach my students to grasp a topic intuitively before helping them develop a rigorous way of expressing themselves verbally and on paper. I encourage clarity and methodical thought which I find makes students more able to develop ideas themselves rather than forced methods they do not understand.
As soon as my students have the tools available I will find time to show them the properly beautiful outcomes that mathematics can produce.
I have been teaching in some capacity since my second year of being an undergraduate. I started as an assistant to first year analysis and then volunteered as a teaching assistant for preliminary number theory courses. Number theory and abstract algebra fascinated me and I still take time to solve problems in them.
I continued private tuition after my first degree while working on my PhD thesis. I found the enjoyment of working closely with students far more engaging, entertaining and rewarding than solitary research so I applied for secondary school mathematics posts and found my first job at Highgate. After that I moved to Latymer Upper school. I had to leave after a long stay in hospital but have since been looking to restart private tuition again.
