I have a genuine love and passion for English, which I'm excited to be able to share through tutoring, but I also remember the stress of sitting high school examinations all too well!
I aim to provide each of my students with the support and tools they need in order to enjoy their studies as much as possible, and ensure that they go into assessments feeling confident, capable and able to perform well.
My approach and teaching methodology are highly interactive and tailored to suit the individual. I begin each class with a brief discussion of what the student hopes to achieve in our lesson, as well as highlighting any specific issues or worries that they may have, and take the lesson from there.
It's my view that students learn best when they feel comfortable and are able to ask for help when they need it; with this in mind, I always try to make my lessons more of a conversation than a monologue!
I'm a final year joint honours student at the University of Glasgow, studying English Literature and History of Art. As part of the requirements of my degree, I have also studied extensively with the English Language and Philosophy departments, giving me an excellent grounding in all levels of English and in the practice of academic writing and assessment. I write extensively in my free time, and have been published on several occasions, both factual articles and pieces of creative writing and poetry.
Stack and Still - Glasgow
July 2019 to December 2019
At Stack and Still, I worked as a 'Pancake Pioneer,' fulfilling the duties of a waitress and hostess. I was individually responsible for a large section of the restaurant and for showing people to their seats, making sure they were happy and comfortable, taking food and drinks orders, performing quality checks, etc.
As the company's image was built in imitation of the American diner model, a high level of customer service and interaction was expected of all employees. The ability to build relationships and rapport with clients was absolutely crucial. As a working environment, the restaurant could be extremely busy and fast paced, requiring excellent time management and attention to detail. While I was individually responsible for keeping my section of the restaurant running smoothly and efficiently, team work was also important in this position, as was the ability to see and respond to problems as they arose and step in to give assistance to my co-workers when necessary during busy periods.
The company's visibility on social media was also an interesting element of this job; as a result of this, being well turned out and representative of the brand's image at all times was crucial, as was having a positive and friendly outlook (and being willing to lead a chorus of 'Happy Birthday' when necessary!) As part of this job, I also received basic health and safety, allergen awareness and alcohol licensing training.
Waitress and Barista
The Urban Lounge - Glasgow
April 2018 to October 2018
At the Urban Lounge my responsibilities included waitressing duties, serving customers, making sure the bar remained clean and welcoming at all times, and preparing a variety of meals, mocktails, and hot drinks. As the bar could be extremely busy- for example, during televised sporting events- the ability to stay positive, cheerful and collected while working under pressure was hugely important. The late finishes and antisocial shift patterns associated with this position also enabled me to develop excellent time management skills.
CeX - Glasgow
April 2017 to July 2017
In CeX my responsibilities included serving customers, identifying and grading technology, and processing both buys and sales.
As the shop saw a very high volume of customers, being able to work at speed was absolutely essential. This also made me much more efficient at communicating with all types of people and in working around impediments such as language barriers. Due in part to the large amounts of customers in addition to the high value nature of much of the stock, CeX was also a fairly high pressure environment in which to work, and helped me develop the ability to maintain a positive, friendly and energetic attitude in potentially stressful situations.
Waitress and Barista
Sips & Bites - Ayr
January 2017 to April 2017
At Sips & Bites my responsibilities included making various types of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate; providing great customer service; preparing simple food such as toasties and paninis; waitressing; clearing and cleaning tables; washing up; and ensuring that the cafe and kitchen environments were clean, tidy, and welcoming. As the cafe was often very busy with multiple orders coming in at once, I learned to work quickly and efficiently under pressure and maintain a calm, friendly and positive disposition at all times!
Neet Wheat Wholefoods - Ayr
April 2016 to January 2017
My responsibilities at Neet Wheat Wholefoods included serving customers, opening and closing the shop, ordering, pricing and packaging stock, and completing nightly accounts.
Due to the medicinal nature of a large amount of the stock, a sound knowledge of herbal healthcare was absolutely crucial. I received some online training in this with Solgar, which I completed in my spare time, as well as in-store training by my manager.
As the shop was a family-run business focused on healthcare, a very high level of customer service was expected from this position, as was evidence of sensitivity, tact, and occasionally a good sense of humour! This job also required a high level of personal responsibility, as I was frequently the only worker in the shop and was expected to fulfil managerial duties when necessary and respond to any problems intelligently as and when they arose.
Volunteer Retail Assistant
July 2013 to August 2015
Volunteering with Oxfam enabled me to gain customer service experience at a fairly early age, and also helped shape me into a confident, friendly person and a good communicator. I became familiar with the foundations of how a business operates through serving customers, dealing with stock and helping with the nightly accounts. As I was still at school and was sitting exams during this time, my volunteering also instilled in me an excellent work ethic and time management skills.
Collier & Brock Veterinary Surgery - Troon
April 2014 to May 2014
During my time at Collier and Brock I assisted in a wide range of duties, including maintaining hygiene within the surgery, standing in on appointments and surgeries, handling animals, and assisting with minor medical procedures.
