Fraser - Ardwick - Composition

Methodology

I have been very fortunate to have been taught by some of the UK's top saxophonists and musicians throughout my musical training. This has given me valuable insight into some very different styles of teaching. I draw upon all of these different teaching styles to help my students progress at a good rate, and more importantly, in the correct way.

I use both published books such as 'Abracadabra Saxophone' and a collection of material that I have created to allow for an individual and effective teaching programme.

I genuinely do believe that it is never too late to learn, and that no matter how good you are, there is always something you can improve.

More importantly I believe that learning a musical instrument should be fun, which is why I will happily tailor lessons to suit you!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Saxophone ( both classical and jazz), Flute, Music Theory, Music Composition, Harmony, and Chamber Music.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a First Class BMus Honours from the RNCM

I have an IMEC qualification (integration of music in an educational context) This course included several placements at specialist music schools around the country, where I was able to watch tutors at the top of their game and learn from them.

I have completed several training sessions with organisations such as reminiscence learning, to give me a deeper understanding of the learning process in all ages.

- How much do you charge?

I charge a standard fee of £24.00 per hour. If you would like me to travel to your house for tuition that is not a problem. I charge an extra £2.00 for travel within the Greater Manchester area.

- Where do you teach?

I am happy to teach both from my home in Ardwick - Manchester, and at your home. On a Saturday I run a small private music school in Manchester called Saturday Saxophones. I am happy to travel to any area around Manchester including, Stockport, Chorlton, Bolton, Altrincham and others of similar distances.

- When are you available?

I am available all week with the exception of Monday. Most of my teaching takes place in the evenings, though that doesn't mean that it has to. if you would like to visit for a lesson during your lunch break or in an afternoon then I'm sure we can arrange something.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach age 8 +

I have extensive experience with both children and adults alike so I am comfortable teaching any age and ability.

I am happy to teach music theory to children younger than 8.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I Prepare Students for a variety of qualifications. These include ABRSM Grade exams, ABRSM Diplomas, Trinity Grade Exams, University/College Entrance Auditions, and GCSE's

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Instrumental:

I am more than happy to offer my services on line and have done in the past, though I find that this service is more suitable to advanced students who have specific issues they want to resolve. I would not reccomend this form of tutoring for begginers as it is very easy to pick up bad habbits when a tutor is not there.

Composition/Harmony/Theory:

Yes

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Learning music can seem tough at times (after all...it is literally a completely new language), but it certainly doesn't have to be a struggle. Learning music should be fun, and I can definitely say that it is because of the joy of music that I look forward to my job every single day!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

Through my study at the RNCM, and since finishing, I have taught privately, through Sixth Form Colleges, and through specialist music schools. Establishments I have taught at include 'Rhythm Foundry' Music School in Stoke-on-Trent, Xavarian College in Manchester and 'The Music Place' in Altrincham.

I am currently in the position of Music therapy co-ordinator at Rowan Park special needs school in Liverpool.

Through 'Live Music Now!' I have been working in the position of Team Leader as part of an SEN project run in conjunction with Oldham Music Service, and Local Schools including North Chadderton Lower School.

I am a very active member of 'Live Music Now!'. this enables me to work with disabled children, and the elderly on a regular basis across the UK. This work ranges from putting on highly interactive concerts to speaking about the instrument, and teaching both small groups and individuals regularly.

I also have experience lecturing to Composers at the Royal Northern College of Music regarding the saxophone and how to compose for the instrument.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester)
Royal Scottish Academy of Music Junior School (Glasgow)
Professor Robert Buckland
Professor Adrew Scott
Julian Arguilles
Camille Mason
Mike Hall

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Malik, is age 15, and is a promising young saxophonist who already has a fantastic grasp of music and is a great singer. we spend our lessons playing music that he enjoys with the aim of making it exciting both to play and to listen to.
