I teach people differently according to what learning style suits them the best. Each learner is different and the beauty of one to one tuition is that, as a teacher, I can really tailor my methodology to you as a learner. I do have a tendency to want to teach grammar and verbs (this is very French!) but only because these are essential foundations to mastering the language. I love to teach by speaking the target language during the lesson, which is OK because there's just two people speaking and I can always switch back to English at any point anyway!
I grew up in Lorraine in the north east of France. With a love for languages from a young age, I studied English literature and art, with an additional module in teaching French as a foreign language, at the University of Nancy. I then met my British husband and came to live in Portsmouth where I spent my first year as a French 'assistante'. I qualified as a teacher the following year (1995) and have not stopped teaching since then. I now teach privately as I retrained as an architectural technologist in 2009 but I still love teaching just as much, if not more, as I believe that learning and speaking a foreign language opens so many doors in one's mind and enriches lives!
I do not have a cancellation policy but I would like for the cancelled lesson to be rearranged for a time soon after the original booking, in order to keep our learning momentum going.
1994 - Licence d'Anglais mention Francais Langue Etrangere, Universite de Nancy II
1995 - Qualified Teacher Status from Portsmouth University
1998 - today: examiner for GCSE and A Level in all 4 skills, but particularly in Speaking and Writing.
I chose Catherine to teach me for two reasons: She is a native speaker of French who is also bilingual and she is also a qualified and experienced teacher. I have not been disappointed: Catherine is always very well prepared, can explain grammar points in a very comprehensible way and focusses entirely on the needs of the student. I highly recommend Catherine as a teacher if you are looking to improve your French.
Excellent tutor - helped me to get an A* in my French GCSE. Very helpful and patient and great with explaining grammar and more complicated French idioms and expressions. Overall I would highly recommend Catherine to anyone looking to improve their French.
Catherine really helped me throughout my A level in French working on both the grammar and the literature and film part of my examination. She was very friendly and open helping me settle into the lessons. She is also an examiner for exams meaning she also knows what the exam boards are looking for, helping you to shape your answers. I would recommend.
