I am a student studying French and History at University and will give French lessons to people of any age, from complete beginners to GCSE level.
We will focus mostly on the areas that you feel you need to improve, either reading, writing, listening or speaking. However I aim to cover all four areas in each lesson. My lessons would be flexible and tailored to your specific needs and level of French.
I will give you vocabulary, and help you to think of similarities between the two languages and tricks to remember them. I will also explain grammar slowly and give examples of its usage to make sure you understand - the complexity of this will be suited to your level. In terms of reading skills I will set translation and comprehension tasks, which be based on the vocabulary looked at. The writing tasks will also be based on the key vocabulary and will vary depending on the level that you are at. In terms of speaking I am very happy for you to pick a topic and for us to just speak to each other for an hour, if that is where you feel you need to improve. Alternatively, we can create role plays based on the vocabulary learned that week. I am able to help you improve your accent and explain the differences in pronunciation between French and English words. For listening, we can look at youtubers, songs, news reports and more - all, of course will be tailored to your level of french. Depending on how long they are we will first listen without subtitles, and then with. As this is useful for picking up sounds in the language, and also matching the sounds to how they are spelled.
I am a patient and encouraging person and will go as quickly or as slowly as you want me to. When speaking french I will encourage you to try to explain the word that you are looking for in French, rather than just telling you the word (which of course I will do afterwards), as being able to work round gaps in language knowledge is very important.
I have been tutoring people since 2015, this has however been in Maths and English, not French. I am now at a level where a feel that I am confident I will be able to teach French to a good degree.
I did speak French once a week for three years with a friend who had lived in France for a while. This was good experience in terms of giving me a good accent and conversational skills, and I feel that I am able to use my experience in this to provide a good standard of tutoring.
In terms of my maths tutoring, in 2015-16, when I was in year 12, I tutored two year 11 students for their Maths GCSEs through my school. I worked through the test papers the school provided with them, but also made up my own questions and wrote explanation sheets in the topics that they were struggling most on. They both got Bs, much better than their target grades.
In 2017, I worked for Kumon. I tutored children between 4-16 in varying difficulties of Maths and English. I helped them work through the sheets that they were given, patiently explained things that they did not understand, and tried to ask questions which would allow them to find the right answers by themselves.
This is the experience I have in tutoring. All other experience in schools with children/teenagers, and in other jobs can be found on my CV below.
My rates do not vary depending on your level of French or the distance I need to travel (though if travel does cost more than £5 I will charge anything over that e.g. if the cost of travel was £5.50, I would charge £16 + 50p).
Cancellation will not cost anything, except if the lesson is cancelled less than four hours before, in which case I will charge half rates (£8 per hour).
Although the first lesson is free, if I have to travel by bus/train I will charge for the fare, but as Cardiff is cheap I expect it will only be between £2-3.
I am a university student, studying French and History, and am looking for part-time work. I am an independent and mature individual. Through my work experience I have gained confidence and demonstrated responsibility, reliability, leadership and communication. I am conscientious and I enjoy helping others. I am driven to complete a task to the best of my ability.

Kumon (Watford), April – September 2017
Every Monday afternoon I tutored groups of up to five children of all ages in Maths and English, helping them to understand their tasks, encouraging them when correcting mistakes to ensure they view learning as a positive process, and explaining new concepts.
GCSE Maths Tutoring, September 2015 – May 2016
Every Tuesday lunchtime I tutored two year 11 students for their maths GCSEs. I helped them work through the assigned test papers, and asked questions that helped them work answers out by themselves, instead of just telling them the answers. I also created my own worksheets to help in problem areas.
Maple Cross JMI School, July 2016 and July 2017
One week work experience in 2016 and six days in 2017. My duties included helping the teacher to set up for lessons, marking work, helping children with their work, supervising play during afternoon break, hearing children read, and supervising baking.
Messy Breakfast, St Mark’s Church, 2013 – September 2017
One Saturday a month I supervised the art table, helping young children to do arts and crafts, and worked with the other volunteers to tidy activities away afterwards.
Sixth Form Community Service, September 2015 – May 2017
Once a week I visited Little Reddings Primary School to hear Year 3 children read. I encouraged them to sound out difficult words and discussed the book with them to ensure they understood what they read.
Oxfam, The Parade, Watford, July 2015 – February 2016
On Wednesday mornings in the holidays I would sort children’s books. This included taking the books that had been out a while off the shelves and bagging them up to send them on to other Oxfam stores. I also reorganised the shelves and sorted through books to decide which ones were suitable to be sold, priced them, and put them out on shelves. Though not specifically part of my role, I occasionally dealt with customer queries.
Maple Cross JMI School, May 2014
Two day work experience. During this time, I did junior office work and stock checking of school uniform. I also improved a database of the uniform stock and records of sales and created statistics from this to decide how much needed to be ordered.
