Bonjour, je m'appelle Ruth!
I am a French Studies graduate with experience teaching primary level (French into English!), although I also have experience working alongside british High School students on residential trips while working for NST in northern France where I guided the groups on cultural and historical tours.
As you may have guessed by now, this means I have been fully DBS checked for all previous jobs.
I am an enthusiastic learner and teacher of language, and hope to engage students in a variety of topics - from conversational and cultural to GCSE required - using resources such as news, television, film & radio clips to help develop listening and speaking skills, alongside standard textbooks, grammar exercises, and past-papers.
Having been through GCSEs, A Levels, and University I understand the importance of preparing good structured arguments in both written and spoken exams, and I hope to be able to transfer some useful ideas and help to prepare for these tasks *before* they arise!
NST Group Coordinator - This is fancy title to say I was a tour guide for British schools in Northern France, speaking french with the (generally teenaged) students as well as the locals and museum staff. I have the vocabulary on top of the general GCSE learning to be able to chat with students about bakeries, markets, world war memorials, among others!
British Council English Language Assistant - This was a job taken on for my University placement year, where I worked in two primary schools teaching English to French students. The job title may say Assistant, but in reality I was the teacher for 7/12 hours per week, I adapted quickly and with enthusiasm, therefore I have plenty of experience making lesson plans and happily presenting them to 20+ kids.
I have also volunteered throughout the 2018-19 school terms with year 4 students who had a variety of strengths and weaknesses - covering reading, writing and maths especially.
I often found myself working on a one-to-one basis covering a range of topics, and all of the students improved considerably, some of whom only needed the boost to believe they could succeed in order for the results to follow through.
From this time, I am confident in my abilities to make a quick and trusting connection with students which will aid in the learning process - especially when we can sometimes feel a bit silly speaking another language.
