As a writer and educator I am primarily focussed on lyrical craft and the creative process. My time at ICMP endowed me with a wealth of tools and methods to sharpen the technical craft of a song to maximise its potential and I learned how to harness the creative process in the most conducive ways to bring the best out of any given songwriter.
I'm a big believer in constantly writing and sharing so I set weekly briefs to encourage you to write in new ways and then give detailed and constructive feedback that will help you grow. I know from experience that sharing new songs can be unnerving so I take a lot of care helping people overcome this hurdle.
Solo sessions are catered towards your individual needs to help you achieve personal goals: whether this be helping you overcome periods of block, write more engaging lyrics, structure exciting chord progressions, find fresher rhymes, or establish your artistic voice/sound. Weekly briefs will challenge you to become the unique writer you want to be.
Group sessions focus on a weekly theme that help students sharpen specific areas of their writing (eg. rhyme, imagery, structure, chord theory, melodies, etc) and have A&R style group feedback sessions in which students can play their work to the group and get instant feedback from their peers on how they can develop.
Outside of classes, I'm open to discuss songs, technique, career goals, co-writing, learning resources or whatever else will help you develop as a songwriter.
David is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
I'm a professional songwriter with over eight years writing experience and countless co-writes in the tank. As a writer, I'm primarily concerned by the lyric and craft side of writing but, as often as not, also compose musical elements.
My specialities are in folk, Americana, pop/rock, and country but am also experienced in R&B, soul, rap, and indie-rock.
I've recently finished a Songwriting Masters' at ICMP in London, for which I received a Distinction, and am currently co-writing with a diverse range of artists for a number of professional projects.
In my Major Repertoire Project at the end of the course, I studied the roles played by the co-writer in writing sessions and this gave me a great insight into the collaborative process and equipped me to be a better rounded collaborator.
In 2017 I completed my BA (Hons) in English and American Studies which gave me a solid foundation for lyric writing and my time as an editor on the student magazine gave me a sharp eye for song editing.
I offer the first 45 minute session free as a way to get on the same page about the direction of the lessons.
I then charge £23 p.h. for subsequent sessions which are individually tailored towards the needs and interests of the student. Each hour lesson takes an average of two hours preparation.
I offer discount bundles for students looking to buy a pack of lessons at once.
Students who cancel with over 24hrs notice gets a full refund. Cancellations within 24hrs will receive a 25-50% discount off the next lesson depending on notice. No shows will be charged at my discretion depending on circumstances as this requires a lot of calendar shuffling.
Perfect! David is really patient and well-prepared for our lessons:) Really enjoyed his lessons:)

My 12 year old daughter enjoys the sessions with David , he keeps her engaged during lessons and motivated to write her own songs.
Megan is keen to learn and recalled all the information from our first session. If she keeps up her enthusiasm and interest, she'll make fast progress.

Chris is really friendly and engaged so I'm very much looking forward to more lessons in the coming weeks.
David and I met on the MA in Songwriting during my time in London. Right from the first time we wrote together, I’ve been intrigued by his incredible eye for detail and his perceptiveness of the people he’s working with. David has a vast knowledge of the craft, of all sorts of different styles, and above all he is a very patient and kind human being. I would trust him with my most personal work, as well as any other kind.
David is a genuine guy with great expertise in predominantly the lyrical aspects of songwriting. He is a boss in explaining his preferences and knowledge and works very detailed and dedicated. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to ask David for help on my writing. David and I co-wrote a song for my debut-EP and he helped me dot the i's and cross the t's for the other songs off the EP.
Knowing David for years, I know he is both hugely knowledgable and committed. He is incredibly friendly, approachable, and adaptable, and all of these traits make him a fantastic tutor. His interest across the board when it comes to musical styles allows for him to be applicable to a wide range of students, and his relaxed and patient nature allow for him to cater with students with varying needs.
I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending him to anyone.
David has just joined my band as our Lead Guitarist and has significantly improved our songwriting since joining - especially in helping with lyrics and lyrical structure. I would highly recommend David to any level of songwriter; he's knowledgable enough to help with experienced writers stuck in a rut, and approachable enough to help those trying out songwriting for the first time.
As someone who is vary wary of collaboration, I can absolutely vouch for David’s professionalism, temperament and ability. He is an exceptional lyricist who pursues detail relentlessly, but also someone who exhibits excellent versatility and agility within the songwriting realm. He is a pleasure to work with and excels at both working with and teaching others.
David is kind, calm and dependable tutor who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of songwriting. He is one of the friendliest people I have met, and I have full confidence that David would be a brilliant tutor for students of all levels and abilities.
Really patient and warm guy. His experience really helps, would highly recommend
David is a skilled, supportive and understanding songwriting teacher who really works to help his students flourish into the best writers they can be.
