My teaching methodology involves dialogue in a step by step approach, which places the student at the centre of the learning process. I tailor my lessons to the subject and exam board the student will be taking. At the moment I only teach online.
I teach stage by stage because all too often I see intelligent and capable students struggle and lose confidence just because they did not understand one detail, which can subsequently impact a whole topic. Sometimes this results in them feeling that they have been ‘left behind’ in class. However, in private lessons all my attention is directed towards the student and questions can be asked any time.
Usually, the student and I start by discussing the theory of the topic and I explain different approaches to problems. We then look at an example with a model solution to illustrate how the theory can be applied to a problem. We then start working on questions together to practise what we have just learnt. I work together with the student and ask them to explain the steps they are taking, because I believe that it is through explaining to others that the concept is acquired and consolidated.
For students who would like to take a GCSE/FSMQ Further Maths qualification but are not offered this subject at school, I would be happy to tutor them so they can take the exam privately themselves. For senior school students planning on taking A level maths or further maths, GCSE/FSMQ additional maths is a great subject to prepare for the rigours of sixth form maths.
There is also another ‘ingredient’ in my methodologies, which is that I love teaching Maths and Physics and I always do my best to make the students feel at ease :)
I am a first year university student at Exeter and have been tutoring GCSE/AS maths and physics for a year. As I was recently a sixth form/school pupil myself, I understand many common difficulties that students face which can sometimes be overlooked by teachers, particularly if they have taught a topic many times.
I believe in the importance of applying knowledge to maths and physics problems and enjoy working through questions with students. I have had success in several maths and physics competitions and would be happy to assist students who would enjoy stretching their potential in these subjects, as well as students who would like to boost their confidence and/or grades.
I am also available for tutoring in English literature AS/A level, but only for the following OCR board exam texts:
The Great Gatsby (F S Fitzgerald)
Hamlet (W Shakespeare)
Paradise Lost (John Milton)
Duchess of Malfi (John Webster)
Wilfred Owen's war poetry
I studied all the above texts at sixth form and achieved A* in A level English Literature.
