About Laura
Hola! Soy Laura. I was born in Venezuela and grew up in the UK. Coming from a bilingual household has allowed me to reach native proficiency in both Spanish and English. It also sparked my interest in the linguistics & love for Hispanic politics. (which I went on to study at Newcastle Uni for my BA)
2018 - 2019 I worked in South America as part of my intercalating year. I taught English at a University in the North of Chile for the British Council.
In 2021, I began my Masters at UCL in Globalisation and Latin American Development. The course covers Human Rights, Economics and Sustainable Development in LatAm, elements of which I can incorporate into your Spanish course, if you're looking for a broad picture on the region ️
I specialise in the AQA Spanish Course (GCSE & ALEVEL) although I have still worked with numerous EDEXCEL & Cambridge Pre-U students also.
Across the 4 years I have tutored Spanish, I have been lucky enough to meet students from Dubai, South Korea, the US, Australia and of course, the UK. My students have ranged from 6 years old to 70 - which is part of what I love most about tutoring. I have learnt as much from my students as they have from me. I look forward to potentially working with you towards your Spanish goal!

Laura is very friendly tutor and really helped my confidence with speaking in Spanish. She’s very efficient and reliable and would recommend to anyone who is hoping to either improve, practice or really advance their Spanish! I have enjoyed every lesson with her and look forward to all my future ones too!
I found Laura through a language agency a couple years ago when I was looking to travel South America during my sabbatical year. Her lessons were fun and she taught me Spanish slang I could use along the way in each of the different countries. If you're looking for someone who will make you look forward to language learning, and not see it as a chore, Laura's the one.
Laura is an extremely professional and compassionate tutor. Having studied with her last summer, I can confidently say paying for lessons with her will be a great investment in yourself. I love all types of dance, and she created personalised classes for me on the topic - to make sure I could talk about my interests in Spanish. Gracias Laurita!
Laura has been our babysitter for a number of years and once our girls started studying for their GCSE Spanish, we chose to also employ her as their tutor. After just a few months with her, their spoken Spanish was excellent and they were receiving glowing reports at school. Would highly recommend her to any parent searching for some extra help!
Great classes and a good price too, gracias Laura x

1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I speak Spanish and English thanks to my parents. My British father went to work in Venezuela in the 90s as a cowboy (not sure what spurred this rogue decision) and he met my Venezuelan mother on the ranch. They lived out there for 11 years (&had me) and We've spoken a lovely mix of Spanglish at home ever since.
I chose to study politics and Spanish at university in order to gain insight into Venezuela's political landscape and to perfect my Spanish grammar. Four years on and I have graduate with a distinction in oral Spanish and having worked for a year teaching English in a Chilean university.02
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Pedro Almodovar is the figure that I would choose as the emblematic representative of Spanish culture. He has produced great films such as 'Volver' which encapsulates much of Hispanic culture. If any of my students are cinephiles, I have a great list of film which I can recommend to stretch their learning that little bit further.
03
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
'Sana sana colita de rana ,Si no sanas hoy, Sanarás mañana'
This is the phrase that many Hispanic parents will sing to their kids if they've had a bit of a bump or a fall. In English it doesn't translate quite so cutely... ' Heal, Heal, Lizard's butt, if it doesn't heal today, it'll heal tomorrow'04
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Speaking Spanish is about so much more than just being able to order your food when you're abroad. It's about understanding a different culture and world perception. I like to talk with my students about the complexity of directly translation and explain some of the meaning that can be lost in translation.
05
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Spanish, luckily is one of the easier languages to learn, with a near identical alphabet and relatively easy phonetics. The only thing I think can take a while to get used to, particularly for beginners, are those pesky irregular verb conjugations, but with regular practice and examples you'll be an expert in no time.
06
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
While this doesn't relate to my language learning, it does relate to tutoring.
At GCSE Level, I really struggled with Math. (I'm talking didn't understand 75% of the exam struggled). With 6 months of private tuition, I went from a predicted E to achieving an A in my summer exams. Not only that but I actually began to enjoy Maths! 1-1 tuition is unparalleled in its ability to supercharge learning and confidence.07
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Although my Spanish was already fluent before I left for my year abroad, it was entirely composed of Venezuelan and Spanish colloquialisms. After travelling through Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Paraguay, I learnt so much more both in terms of the continents culture and language differences.
08
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
In my opinion a good learning environment is one that is interesting, creative and friendly. I hope to provide all my students with tailored classes that build their confidence while also capturing their interests. Everyone is different, and so it's no surprise that we all learn differently. I look forward to potentially helping you to fulfil your goal of learning Spanish, your way!
