Teaching Experience
Ages & abilities- I've taught approximately 50 pupils privately from age 6 - 60 and Beginner to Advanced levels. Peripatetically I teach in a secondary school in Knightsbridge and specialist music school in Hackney, group classes and 1 to 1 lessons. I am used to developing confidence and inspiration in my pupils.
Exam preparation- I have taught Grade 1 - Grade 5 Trinity and Rock School Exam syllabuses. My pupils have achieved passes to distinctions. I tailor my lessons to cover the key elements of the exam ( repertoire, sight reading etc) and create a schedule to make sure that all areas are covered. I liaise with students to make sure we cover all aspects of the syllabus with plenty of additional time to polish. I identify performance opportunities for my pupils. This can mean recommending local jam nights, or school concert opportunities and talent showcases. I also encourage pupils to attend masterclasses.
Resources - I use the following books to teach beginner to advanced technique : Realistic rock for kids, Absolute beginner Book 1 & 2, Drumsense, Advanced Funk Studies, Future sounds, Syncopation, Stick Control, Groove Essentials etc. I also transcribe drum parts for my students, use programs such as NoteFlight which means that pupils can play back the music and also use Apps that slow down pieces of music . This gives them a permanent reference point. I also make sure to give my pupils key drummers to listen to in between lessons. I also arrange parts for my pupils - this means I am able to adapt pieces to the level of my students. In secondary school group classes of mixed ability I make sure there are a range of levels in the parts to be played, this creates some competition as to who can play the most difficult part (usually tuned percussion).
Additional needs: I have taught children and adults with a range of learning disabilities including ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I make sure I tailor my lessons specifically to their needs ie sometimes I use games. I also make sure not to spend too long on individual sections. I make the learning objectives accessible. Making notes in pupil’s books and encouraging students to practice with their peers works well in school.

My teaching style - Building good relationships with pupils is crucial. I set manageable learning objectives for each individual and share my passion for the drums to make the lessons enjoyable and inspiring. I use humour if they are nervous, something which pays dividends in the students attitude towards practicing! I believe it is the teacher's job to inspire the student to succeed. I do this by delivering varied and stimulating lessons that can cover a wide range of techniques and style. I get my students playing songs as soon as possible and like to move on every week, adding something new to their repertoire to continue to stimulate them. I am a natural communicator and want to inspire the best in my pupils. I loved my drum lessons so much I wanted to become a musician and that is what I want my students to feel. In school particularly I understand some students benefit from less pressured lessons, so drumming becomes a release from their other stressful academic subjects.
I also hold an Enhanced DBS Check.
Feedback: (Via my online profile on Tutorful)
“This was my first ever drum lesson and Olie got me playing along to a song within 10 minutes. Later learning a simple groove and generally playing on a kit with some ease, considering it was my first time. Patient and easy to get along with, I really enjoyed my lesson. Cheers Olie!"
“Olie is a fantastic tutor - he is very good at knowing when to challenge my son while encouraging him, and he engages with his interests and suggests pieces to engage with them, while also widening his understanding and repertoire.

I can't recommend him highly enough."
“Olie is an excellent tutor. He tailored my lessons to the music style I like and introduced me to different types of drumming. Would definitely recommend!”
“Great tutor, Olie has totally tailored the lessons to what I wanted to get out of them! Would recommend”
" I had a fantastic first lesson with Olie! I was drumming to an entire song by the end of the session, which I had not expected upon signing up as a beginner! He’s a lovely guy, really easy to get along with and very encouraging! Great teacher! Can’t wait for the second lesson!"
" Olie is a great teacher! I thoroughly enjoyed our first lesson and will definitely be doing more! Highly recommend booking him as a tutor."
" My son loves his drum lesson with Olie and looks forward to it every week. Olie is friendly, great fun, knowledgeable and a patient teacher. His lessons are effective, motivating and very enjoyable."
Performance experience:
Musicals: Drummer / percussionist in musicals such as South Pacific, West Side Story, Fame, We Will Rock You, Les Miserables.

I also play tuned percussion such as Xylophone and Glockenspiel, Timbales, Clave, Congas, Cowbell, and Vibraphone. I have performed Light Mass - Vytautas Miskinis at Christchurch, Chelsea.
Jazz & Funk & Latin: I gig regularly in and around London with trios, quartets, quintets and larger ensembles.
Compostion: I have arranged and directed pop and jazz songs for String Quartet, Jazz Combo and Funk bands. My knowledge of jazz harmony techniques such as 7th chords, voicings (such as drop 2), circle of fifths, musical notation and ear training are all at a level where I can use them to compose, arrange and direct on the spot.
Musical Directing: which meant arranging a song and directing a band how to play their individual parts. These included big band, latin and rock arrangements.
