Gap year English Literature student offering English tutoring in the London area

Methodology

As I just finished school in June 2017, I will be able to confidently tutor both primary and secondary school children with ranging abilities especially as I have recently gone through the school examination system. As a tutor, I will manage my lessons in a way that suits the inidivdual student and helps them to engage. I will make sure the student is tested frequently to make sure they have retained information, and thoroughly understood the lessons.

Experience

I will be studying English Literature at Exeter University in September. I am currently on a gap year having done voluntary work abroad in Vietnam teaching English. At A-Level, I achieved an A* in English Literature and an A in English Language.

I have won nine All-Britain titles in individual competitions in Irish Traditional Music and a third place in the All-Ireland competition.
I have received full-colours for Athletics, Football, Hockey and Cross Country.

Skills:
I am very good at communicating with those around me, thus ensuring we can work together as a team effectively using limited resources. I have demonstrated this through competing with a Traditional Irish Music group and as youth officer for London Comhaltas (society of Irish musicians), which have also enabled me to develop my leadership, debating and public speaking skills. Specifically, by mentoring younger children I have helped enable them to develop their personal skills related to performance, practice and self-motivation.
Working in customer service as a supermarket assistant has also helped develop my interpersonal skills having to work with other staff members as well as the needs of the public.

I have exemplified my strong teamwork skills, as it was an essential part of playing with a girl’s football team and competing in a league for seven years.
I am also able to work very well independently and plan effectively and efficiently as demonstrated through my work at Woodhouse College in the English department, being part of an advanced literary group, I both engaged in extra-curricular discussions, and planned extra lessons after the school day for the lower year.

Writing articles for the youth charity 'Exposure' has enabled me to develop my presentation and time-management skills. As an independent learner, I was successful in completing my EPQ developing my research, tabulation and planning skills. This enabled me to complete a full-length play-script focussing on the stigma surrounding mental health in young people.

I have also demonstrated my ability to plan and organise effectively. For example, I organised the music for a St Brigid’s Day event at the Irish Embassy in February 2018 which involved planning, organising and performance on my behalf.

I worked as an international volunteer in Hanoi, Vietnam in March 2018 teaching English in a secondary school. This allowed me to exhibit my planning and organisational skills, as well as my communication skills.

Interests:
One of my main interests is sport having played for a football team for seven seasons. At school I have ran both for the athletics and cross-country teams as well as taking part in both hockey and football at school. I have participated successfully in the OGI (The Italian Community Olympics) 3 times, competing in track events including relay races. I am an active member of a local Explorers group and enjoy developing outdoor skills with the rest of my group.

Another interest I have is Irish traditional music. I play the tin-whistle and traditional wooden flute competing successfully in competitions individually and as part of a group. I am also learning the Uillean pipes, a traditional Irish instrument. I have performed at several festivals and events such as the St Patrick’s Day Festival in Trafalgar Square, The Royal Albert Hall, and Kings Place and at various events at the Irish Embassy.

I am predominantly interested in English Literature. I plan to study this at Exeter University in September 2018. Visiting both Steinbeck’s home in Monterey and Yeats’ home in Ireland on my current gap year, I have been spending a lot of time reading. I have recently enjoyed a variety of first, second and third wave gothic novels whilst expanding my reading, such as Horace Walpole's 'Castle of Otranto' and Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey', and reading Angela Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories' at A-level led me to read 'Angela Carter's Book Of Fairy Tales'.

My interest in the English Language was also demonstrated on my volunteer programme abroad with ‘Volunteers for Peace Vietnam’ indicative of my interest in aiding communication, teaching and working both individually and collectively with other volunteers.

I also completed NCS, a Government-sponsored scheme where I learnt team building skills and developing life skills of my own. As part of NCS I completed a Social Action Project. My group and I intend to raise awareness of Herts Young Homeless, a Hertfordshire-based charity that is taking action against youth homelessness throughout the county.
