GCSE or A Level English tutorials from an Oxford English graduate with four years' tutoring experience

Methodology

I improve my students' grades by tailoring tutorials closely to the mark schemes of their exams, building up the taught material in line with the exam board's specification and guidelines. This ensures that my students know their texts well, and know how to translate that knowledge into high-scoring exam scripts.

Hello! I'm Annabelle, a Classics and English graduate from Magdalen College, Oxford. I have been giving private tutorials in GCSE and A Level English for over three years, and recently brought a student's GCSE English Literature grade up from a 5 to an 8. Mostly, I tutor GCSE, Pre-U, and A Level students in English, but I also tutor Latin on request and have extensive experience with university admissions tutoring, especially for Oxbridge.

I have also completed Bystander Intervention Training and am trained as a Peer Supporter, so offer pastoral support to back up my high standards of academic tutoring.

There is nothing better than helping students to achieve their goals, whether that involves instructing them in exam technique, giving them the opportunity to access detailed feedback on essays, or simply allowing them the space to talk in depth about exam subjects and develop confidence in their own ideas. During the course of the pandemic, more students than ever have needed academic support outside of the classroom, and I am always happy to take on students that are looking for extra help.

I spend quite a lot of my non-tutoring time reading! Outside of that, I am a very keen skier, and love visiting galleries in London, as well as enjoying the theatre and opera with friends.

Annabelle's response

Tutoring Giorgio is always a pleasure. He is enthusiastic about the texts he is studying at school, as well as the poems and extracts which we have been analysing together. With a little extra diligence (that is, checking over his work and taking care to integrate his quotations into the body of essays), I am confident that his already impressive command of the English language and its literatures will improve still further.

Perfect! Annabelle is a nice, enthusiastic teacher with extensive knowledge of English and English teaching .She is very supportive of ideas and has very useful techniques for writing which helped me improve the way I write and appropriately identify any sort of mistakes when doing so. I strongly recommend Annabelle!!!

Annabelle's response

It was lovely to meet Ethan! He has a strong list of activities and interests to put on his personal statement, and we discussed the best way to start writing it. I also suggested that he read one English news article per day as a quick way of improving his English skills. His English is very good on the whole and I am confident that with a bit of work and editing he can produce a great personal statement for his applications.

I have only had a few lessons with Annabelle, but I have already improved immensely in English thanks to her. Her teaching method is very concise, helpful and engaging. She covers all the topics I require so that I'm confident in my knowledge of the subject. She also gives valuable feedback and suggestions to improve my personal weak areas.

Annabelle is intelligent and can enthusiastically explain any subject in English. She is supportive and won't move on to another topic until you're happy with it. I always leave her lesson well-informed, pleased and anticipating the next one. Highly recommend! : )

Annabelle is always prompt, attentive, and specialises the tutoring around what the pupil finds comfortable whilst maintaining academic rigour and working towards a clear goal. All of her material is original and tailored, and in my experience can provide equal benefit from beginners to intermediate learners alike.

Interview with Annabelle

QUESTION 01 | 04
1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Annabelle — English and Latin were always my favourite subjects at school, so I chose to study Classics and English at Oxford. This is when I began tutoring, with just one student, and I soon realised that I loved tutoring these subjects. Over the last four years I have built up a roster of regular clients, and am always happy to take on new ones. Being able to share my knowledge of and enthusiasm for my two favourite subjects is wonderful, and I hope to keep doing it for a long time.
QUESTION 02 | 04
2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Annabelle — Tutoring English takes up most of my schedule. I occasionally teach English as a foreign language, but much prefer tutoring literature. It's fabulous to have a range of students from Key Stage 3 up through GCSE and to A Level, and my favourite tutoring sessions usually involve in-depth discussion of texts (especially Shakespeare!) tailored to the student's needs, and backed up with advice on good exam technique and revision planning. I teach Latin or Classics to a handful of students, often for the Common Entrance exams or to give extra help to GCSE students, and spend the rest of the time doing admissions tutoring. Editing personal statements, preparing mock interviews, and advising students on their university applications - often for Oxbridge - takes up a lot of time, but I find the work extremely rewarding.
QUESTION 03 | 04
3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Annabelle — Mrs McKeefry, my English teacher, has always been an inspiration to me. Her unique and creative attitude to teaching literature has stayed with me ever since I started school, and she was responsible for introducing me to many of my favourite books and for setting me ambitious extra-curricular reading and essays. I have actually incorporated some of her methods into my teaching of English Language!
QUESTION 04 | 04
4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Annabelle — I think that flexibility is one of the most important qualities required of a good tutor. All of my tutoring is adapted to the needs of every individual student, and I find that this helps students to attain the best results. My job is to help students to achieve their goals and fulfil their potential, and the best way to do this is by creating tailor-made plans and lessons for each individual. Enthusiasm is also an incredibly important quality for a tutor to have, as is patience, and I have spent time honing these two skills during my tutoring career.
