I focus upon the conceptual understanding of the student for a given topic, such as algebra. I test for this by continuously deriving feedback from the student via gentle questioning and through their attempted solution of problems, such as solving an equation. Much of mathematics is based upon a conceptual hierarchy; for example solving an equation requires understand of prior concepts such as independent and dependent variables.
I believe that every tuition session must begin by first assessing the student’s existing level of understanding, and then building upon it; conceptual layer-by-layer in an iterative motion.
I endeavour to ensure the student is relaxed, engaged and enjoying the session at all times. I believe in the pedagogical perspective of constructivism in which the student is an active and dynamic learner, as originally promoted by educational cognitive psychologists such as Jean Piaget, Richard Skemp and Seymour Papert.
I always set homework for the following session to ensure that I receive further feedback on the student’s understanding of a given topic. Homework necessarily focuses on both the current topic of study and those previously taught to ensure that the student is ready for their GCSE, BTEC or GCE A’ Level examinations.
I regularly communicate with parents/guardians to keep them up to date with progress made, and to encourage them to engage with the school regarding issues such as promoting a student to a higher class or to swap from a ‘Foundation’ GCSE paper to a ‘Higher’ one at the appropriate time.
Great use of GCSE and A’ Level past papers is made to ensure that the student is familiar and at-ease with their formal format and demands.
