George - Broomhill - Support For Students With Dyspraxia

Methodology

I am studying towards a Masters (MMus) in Performance and Composition at the University of Sheffield.

I currently have a deal on all new bookings until 31st January 2013. Please check the 'How Much do you charge?' Section below!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach a variety of Brass instruments, with Trumpet being my primary study. I teach up to, and beyond, ABRSM Grade 8 Standard on trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn and tenor horn. I can teach up to grade 5 on Euphonium and Tuba. I also teach up to grade 5 Piano, as well as beginner guitar (Acoustic, Classical and Electric). I also offer masterclasses and study sessions using Sibelius Notation Software (up to advanced level), as well as lessons in score layout, orchestration and typesetting. I also teach Theory (up to ABRSM Grade 8) and Composition (in any style), as well as beginner conducting lessons for young musicians who'd like to have a go at leading an ensemble.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

In June 2011 I graduated with a high 2.1 degree BMus(Hons) from the University of Sheffield, and I'm now studying towards a Mmus in Performance and Composition at the same institution.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30.00/hour for performance lessons on all instruments. I also offer lessons on Sibelius and Conducting for £35.00/hour. I am available to teach 30 minute and 40 minute lessons priced at £15 and £20 respectively. I can offer a discount for families with more than one family member (no age limit!) wishing to take up lessons with me (2+ people weekly lessons). Please get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Special offer: Christmas present!- If you book a consultation lesson with me between 26th December 2012 and 31st January 2013 you will receive a 10% discount on your first block of 5 lessons. This offer can only be redeemed once by a family, but you will still receive the extra discount if you want to have more than one family member take up lessons.

- Where do you teach?

I can teach from home (brass and guitar, conducting and sibelius only) or in a pupil's home. I am able to travel to all areas of South Yorkshire (Full, clean driving licence held for 5 years). Areas include: Sheffield, Chesterfield, Barnsley.

- When are you available?

I am available during the week, both during the day, and in the evening. I am also available during the weekend. My timetable is pretty flexible, so I can work around work/school commitments.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages in all subject fields. Current pupils range from 6-40 years old. There is a myth amongst brass tutors that a child can only begin playing an instrument when they have their two front adult teeth. This has been proven to be incorrect- studies show that brass players use their gums to rest the mouthpiece against. If you're unsure whether your child is too young to begin lessons, please get in touch and I can advice you honestly- I won't take on a pupil if they're not ready to begin lessons, it can do more damage, both mentally and physically, than it's worth.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for any exams they wish, but I usually work from the ABRSM syllabus. Pupils are not under any obligation to take exams on there instrument, so if you feel you just want lessons without taking exams, that is completely acceptable.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can offer certain lessons online, via skype. If you're unsure if I offer the instrument you are keen to learn over the internet, please get in touch. Instrumental lessons take place via webcam and headset + instrument mic. Lessons will begin when we're both happy the connection is clear, and will pause if there is any problems with the connection, meaning you don't lose vital lesson time while the internet cuts out. Lessons on Sibelius will take place via Skype's 'show screen' capability, which allows you to see what I'm doing in Sibelius, and so I can assist you with working your software.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

One of the most important things I have learned, and subsequently passed on to all of my pupils is that practice is practice. It isn't a concert performance, or a recital. If one is able to practice everything perfectly every time, then practice becomes pointless. Practice sessions aren't always going to sound perfect, and will quite often leave a pupil frustrated. I encourage my pupils to take positive things from everything they do, even from a diabolical practice session- music is after all for fun, it should always be a fun pastime, whether it be professionally or individual, I ensure pupils have fun whatever standard they are at!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

Performance- I am experienced in all styles and genres of performance on Trumpet. As principle trumpet for The Sheffield University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, New Music Ensemble and Wind Orchestra, I have performed in many concerts and performances in a wide variety of repertoire (from Brahms-Shostakovich).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Although I have CRB disclosure certificates for previous employment, I do not currently have an up-to-date CRB as it is not a legal requirement for tutoring. I can provide a copy of existing certificates if required by a parent or guardian.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I began lessons with Phil Richards (RAF trumpeter), and took extra lessons with Matt Peck (RAF) and Malcolm Duckles (Lincolnshire Music Services). Since starting university (Sep' 2008) I have studied with Ken Brown (23 years and counting with the Hallé Orchestra). I studied with Graham Patman (Cambridge Graduate, Church organist) on Piano for over 5 years.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musicians' Union.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students range from 5 year old complete beginners, to 35 year olds who haven't played an instrument since they were ten. With most pupils I teach from books and materials that are highly regarded by the profession. I do work away from study books as well, to improve students musicality and development. I currently teach a pupil who has no wish to learn the finer aspects of reading/performing music, and is happy to just learn well known tunes from films and pop songs. For these lessons I prepare individual worksheets to work on different aspects of playing, and introduce new songs and movie themes to the pupil weekly.
