Glasgow History PhD candidate offering tutorials in History, English, Music and Politics

Methodology

I am an experienced tutor who offers well structured, and thought out, tutoring sessions to lower 6th students upwards

My methods of instruction involve mutual respect and understanding, thereby allowing me to tailor my teaching exactly to your needs. The first lesson explores what I can offer you, how you wish to learn and which topics you wish to cover. Following lessons then get into the tutoring more formally, with the end goal being to ensure that you are successful no matter which subject/s you have an interest in. My tutoring is, therefore, whole person centred

Background

I am a 'Cellist, Pianist, Organist and Bass - a former Chorister of Lincoln Cathedral. I have been tutoring online for just over 2 years and have taught a good number of students. Most recently helping someone gain a first in their 2nd Year Undergraduate examinations

Owain's CV

Profile:

My academic interests are varied, covering both the disciplines of Politics and History, as well as Music. I
am particularly interested in how intellectual culture has developed since the 11th/12th Centuries, and the
and the impact this still has today. At present, I am seeking tutees - online or in person - in Glasgow, where I began my PhD in History and Music in September 2018

Education:

2018+: The University of Glasgow, PhD History

My Glasgow Thesis is to look into Bishop Robert Grosseteste, J. S. Bach and the impact that Franciscan thought had upon the two men - its title is: “Music, Knowledge, Faith and Reform in the Thought and Practice of Robert Grosseteste and J. S. Bach”

Primary Supervisor: Dr John R Davies
Second Supervisor: Professor John Butt

Result: Ongoing

2016: The University of Bristol, PhD in Politics

My Bristol Thesis sought to understand the reasons behind why Jeremy Corbyn won the 2015 & 2016 Leadership Elections, then to work out the impact that this was having upon the UK Labour Party. The scope of my research was to put forward a much more nuanced, intersubjective, useful framework by which to judge Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership in the period September 2015 to September 2016

Primary Supervisor: Professor Mark Whickham-Jones
Second Supervisor: Professor Sarah Childs

Result: Withdrew due to financial constraints of self funding

2015-2016: Queen’s University Belfast, MA in Politics

My MA Thesis “Jeremy Corbyn - a very British Populism: re-engaging those left behind by New Labour through main-streaming Bevanism” examined the reasons why Jeremy Corbyn was the right leader at the right time, and the extent to which he had moved the Labour Party away from an over reliance own broad but shallow support. At its heart it wished to show that the narrative against Corbyn are based on deception rather than truth, only resulting in greater support for him amongst the membership, rather than less.

Dissertation Supervisor: Dr Lee McGowan

Final Grade: 64 - Merit

Result: Withdrew due to financial constraints of self funding

2008-2012: The University of York, BA in Politics

Units included: Contemporary Political Philosophy; Politics of Development; Philosophy of Human Rights; The Idea of Liberty; Topics in British Government: British Foreign Policy since 1945 and a Dissertation looking at Gordon Brown’s Foreign Policy (Described as “unique in a crowded field” by Steve Richards of the Independent Newspaper)
