Goals-Focused English Classes with teacher/academic (26 years), author, UCL PhD.

Methodology

I am a goals-focused English teacher who will:

LISTEN to your questions, concerns, and needs
EVALUATE your level and requirements
PROVIDE exercises, materials, and feedback
SUPPORT you as a unique learner
ADVISE you on how to develop further

I'm in London. (My students tell me that I speak clear, British English.)

Depending on your needs, I can help you with:

* Workplace and business writing
* Academic English
* Coursework and exams (school, undergraduate and up to PhD)
* Proofreading
* English for non-native speakers
* Grammar and accuracy
* Structure and persuasiveness
* Creative writing and writing for publication

My students have gone on to pass exams (e.g. GSCE and A Level English and English Literature), gain places at top schools and universities, obtain degrees (e.g. BA, MA and PhD) in numerous subjects, write with more confidence at work, and publish books.

All lessons are via Zoom (or Skype or FaceTime if you prefer). I look forward to meeting you!

Experience

Over 26 years, I've taught teenagers, college and university students, and adults of all kinds (students and professionals, native and non-native speakers). I'm still excited by the prospect of meeting new students and helping them achieve their targets.

My specialism is in helping people express themselves clearly, accurately and fully in writing. The best way to do this, I have found, is through individual tutorials.

I have probably spent more than 7500 hours teaching students individually. I'm happy to draw upon my extensive experience to help you improve your English.

Rate for 10 hours of lessons : £400

Details

First lesson free: 30 minutes. During this time, you can tell me about your situation and needs, and ask me any questions you have. I'll listen carefully and outline how I can best develop your learning. You'll get a good sense of me and how I work.

Can you send work for Dr Adrian to read prior to your online meeting?

You can. However, if the reading involved is going to take me more than half an hour, I'll schedule a time for it and treat it as your first (free) session. In such cases, you get feedback on your writing in the next session, which will be for an hour and will require payment.

Dr Adrian is a kind, approachable, interesting and excellent tutor. His lectures at university were very inspiring and he helped me improve my writing skills. Anyone who has the opportunity to learn from Dr Adrian is very fortunate.

Adrian provided such fantastic support while I was writing my book (published since!) and I much enjoyed our stimulating conversations during and about the writing process. He gave me excellent advice on how to structure and present my material and his comments on my introduction and prologue were a great help. I am grateful for all his feedback, which he always delivered in a respectful and encouraging manner. Adrian is a dedicated teacher with a wealth of knowledge and experience - I wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor.

Adrian was my tutor during my first year of a history degree. Among many fine tutors at the university, Adrian's diligent, and patient teaching, and his perceptive feedback for my essays, were absolutely instrumental in my gaining a First Class Honours. What really sticks is how his cultured, humourous and enthusiastic tutorials really inspired a lifelong love of learning for me.

Adrian is simply an excellent teacher, and one with a perfect grasp on English. He really helped me when I was writing my PhD dissertation in English literature and needed help with everything from language, incl. grammar, to literary analysis and theory. As a non-native speaker myself, Adrian was perfect for my needs and he benefited my writing process a lot. I know he has helped countless other students – all ages, the majority in their teens and 20s. He’s also a very engaging speaker (I’ve heard him speak at 3 conferences). And finally, he’s always relaxed, reliable and friendly. 5 out of 5!

R
Ryan

A people person through-and-through and an authority on literature, history, psychology, and the relationships between the three.

More than that, Adrian is kind, personable, and extremely generous with his time. I've learned a great deal from him and always look forward to any opportunity to have a cuppa and enjoy his infectious enthusiasm for his work.

Interview with Dr Adrian

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Dr Adrian — I started to really enjoy English when I was a teenager. I would devour books from my local library and began writing creatively. At university, I first studied Politics and Philosophy but switched to English. While still a student, I began tutoring and immediately appreciated the variety of students I encountered and the pleasures of one-to-one teaching.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)
Dr Adrian — I teach English and writing-English of any sort for native or non-native students from the age of 12 up to mature students. My focus varies according to each student's needs-I like tuning into people's specific requirements. I enjoy discussing literature, explaining grammar, thinking about how to write accurately and fluently, preparing students for exams, and helping authors and business people with their writing projects. Most of all, I like improving students' writing.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Dr Adrian — I had more negative than positive models in high school! But at university, and especially when I was studying for my MA and PhD, I encountered teachers who were open, relaxed, focused and challenging-qualities I try to bring to my tutoring.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Dr Adrian — A good tutor has first-class subject knowledge and enthusiastically shares it. Experience, too, is vital. Most importantly, though, a good tutor is genuinely interested in his or her students' progress. From this, comes the tutor's attentiveness, patience and kindness. Drawing on these qualities, a good tutor intellectually stimulates and supports students as unique, individual learners.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Dr Adrian — Studying for a PhD at University College London, I did not have any classes, just twice-monthly meetings with my supervisors. We met for about an hour and-a-half to discuss my reading and the writing I had been doing. At each meeting, I learned something surprising or new-a different way of imagining or making sense of a topic, or a new way of expressing myself in writing. Sometimes my brain ached afterwards, I'd been thinking so hard. But how privileged I am to have enjoyed such an education!
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?
Dr Adrian — I think all good teachers have to 'reign themselves in' a bit at times. Teachers get enthusiastic about their subject; sometimes this can lead them to talk a little too much. At the start of each lesson, I remind myself not to talk too much, to listen carefully to my student, and to respond to the student as an individual.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Dr Adrian — I enjoy getting to know students and helping them progress. Writing is my especial passion-my own writing and that of others. I love helping students express themselves on the page. Over the years, I've learned how to offer feedback in ways that students can work with.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering the interview questions :-P)
Dr Adrian — Experience, knowledge, commitment and good humour make me a SuperProf. But don't just take it from me: Read my recommendations and reviews!
