About the lesson
Singing lessons will begin with warm-ups in the form of scales and arpeggios. This helps the student to physically warm up and to start thinking about technical aspects of singing. All aspects of the lesson, including the warm-up, will be tailored to the individual.
After a warm-up we will have some technical exercises. These will be related to the repertoire that we will cover in the lesson. These lessons will include aural training as well, as this is important for any musician.
While focussing on the repertoire in the lesson, we will discuss the musical aspects of the piece and while concentrating on getting the notes in the right order and at the right time, we will also think about what the piece means and the message we are trying to communicate to the listeners.
The end of a lesson will include a goal for the next time and a summary of what we have covered so far.
I like to keep a note of the repertoire, technical excercises and individual goals for each student to help us to focus on the appropriate short-term goals which will enable us to achieve the long-term goal the student is aiming for. This could be a graded ABRSM exam, an audition for a choir or orchestra, or learning a piece for the joy of it. Keeping a record of this is also important for monitoring progress, which is essential for motivation and morale.

I am a mezzo soprano and have recently completed an MMus in Historical Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I studied with a scholarship from the school. I have been teaching freelance for around 4 years while I have been studying. I have held various choral scholarships in the choirs I have sung in while in London, including St George’s Beckenham, the Schola Cantorum, All Hallows, Gospel Oak and the Hampstead Chambers Choir. I have sung in many different styles, most recently I have performed in Baroque Opera scenes and various choral concerts within the Guildhall and as a soloist and chorister. I love to teach music and to inspire a love of music in my students, while helping them to gain a deeper understanding and therefore a greater appreciation for it.
After a few sessions with Lizzy my confidence grew and I found myself happy to try new challenges in our lessons. Her patience and clear understanding of my abilities helped so much to help me :) I thoroughly recommend her as a teacher!
Elizabeth (Lizzy) has an excellent technical knowledge and great enthusiasm which she combines perfectly through her ability to teach people of all ages and levels. She draws very effectively on her own training and range of singing experience to provide lessons at the right level for her students to make good progress while also enjoying their singing. She is particularly good at explaining and demonstrating singing techniques to young children in a way that they can understand and make the lessons fun to take part in.
I have known Lizzy for years. She is not only a talented musician but is exceptionally gifted as a teacher. Lizzy has a charisma that encourages and empowers.
I’m so pleased to have this opportunity to recommend Lizzy to you. She has improved my singing and my confidence! Ruth
I have known Lizzy for four years (we met at university) and have had a number of lessons with her during this time, often in the lead-up to choral scholarship auditions. Lizzy's lessons are thorough and fun, combining discipline and focus with a hearty sense of humour – I found her knowledge of vocal technique and her points on interpreting texts particularly enlightening, and would highly recommend her as a teacher.
