I have a calm, friendly and patient approach towards teaching, with the aim of trying to build enjoyment, understanding and hopefully a love of music rather than mere technical proficiency. Practical piano lessons are offered in person in my or the student's home. Theory classes can be conducted online.
I'm a classical pianist educated at the Royal College of Music and London College of Music who has been teaching piano and music theory for over 20 years as an expatriate in Taiwan. I've now relocated to Swindon, Wiltshire, and I'm accepting students. In Taiwan I've taught both local and Western students of all levels from prep grade to post Grade eight and diploma level. I also teach theory, and have prepared about ten students to take the ABRSM Grade five theory exam, which is necessary for any students wishing to take ABRSM exams grade six and above.
Classical musician and piano/theory teacher with twenty years of teaching piano
I hold a degree in Music Theory and Performance from the London College of Music (now absorbed by the University of West London), and a Fellowship of the London College of Music in Piano Performance.
I've taught children between the ages of 6 and 18, and adults of all ages, ranging from complete beginners (with no ability to read music or play) to advanced, post-grade eight (ABRSM) students. My specialty is classical music of all periods (with a personal specialisation in early twentieth century music from England, France and Spain).
Richard was my piano teacher for over 13 years, and in that time equipped and inspired me to be a lifelong musician. He has a deep knowledge of a wide variety of pieces of all styles. His lessons emphasize musicianship and the ability to listen critically to one's own playing. I remember his guidance being invaluable in more difficult-to-interpret pieces such as Scriabin's 2 Poemes, op 32, something that demanded a lot of musical maturity for a teenager and helped me develop more than the more technical showpieces, though Richard was also happy to teach those and guide me through the ABRSM exams.
I feel like you could get a fantastic musical education if you were didn't even play piano and were just listening to Richard speak about music. It almost feels like a bonus that he is also brilliant as a pianist and can provide a lot more on top of that.
Richard taught my daughter piano for 2 years. He had a very patient and gentle manner with her. She thoroughly enjoyed her lessons and gained an excellent grounding in both piano and musical theory with him.
Richard Saunders is a highly skilled, and distinguished talented pianist. I witnessed this during the extensive choral rehearsals of the premiere performance of my transcendental symphony ‘Heavenly Peace’ in Taipei, in 2005, of which Mr. Saunders was a very exquisite accompanist. Furthermore was I very charmed and surprized of his unusual and profound repertoire as a solo pianist. Beijng a concert pianist myself; I can confirm here, the deep knowledge and understanding of the technical AND artistic aspects of pianism in Mr. Saunders. Warmly recommend Richard Saunders, for pedagogical, accompanist and concert solo appearances!
Richard Saunders is an English concert pianist who has secured a reputation in a corner of the Far East for giving exciting recitals of sometimes obscure but very challenging piano works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For twenty years, Richard has also been a sought after chamber music collaborator and piano pedagogue.
If you are looking for a great teacher then look no further. Richard is your man. Young or mature students, Richard quickly figures out "how" to teach individuals. As a bonus, he is a fantastic pianist and a genuinely lovely guy. I could not recommend anyone more highly.
