ELIZABETH WHEELER

(concealed information)7 (concealed information) elizabethwheeler.myportfolio.com

I am a lively and creative individual, and approach my work with energy and tenacity. Experience of working with children and art has demonstrated to me the importance of education and the power of creativity and led to my ambition of becoming an art teacher. Qualities in organisation and leadership make me well suited to a role in education.

Education

2016-Present
Bath Spa University, BA Graphic Communications
- Learning technical skills in printmaking, photography, animation and coding.
- Developing industry skills in indentity awareness and professional conduct.
- Developing skills in illustration, graphic design and animation.

2015-2016
Oxford Brookes University, Art and Design Foundation (Distinction)
- Learning skills in fine art, visual communications, 3D design, and textiles.
- Specialising in Visual Communications, for which I illustrated and bound a book series.

2008-2015
School of St Helen and St Katharine:
A Levels: Art and Design (A), Biology (A), Geography (A)
AS Levels: 4 (grades A) including Art and Design
GCSE’s: 10 (Grades A-A*), including Fine art, ceramics, English and maths (All A*)

Relevant Experience

2018-Present
Studio 306 Collective:
I work voluntarily with this studio doing graphic design of their promotional material. The studio helps members of the collective recover from mental illness through creativity.

2018
Schools Without Walls:
Volunteering with the running of workshops in ceramics, textiles, drawing and collage for 7-8-year- olds, as part of the 5×5×5=creativity initiative which aims to encourage learning through creativity.

2018
Bristol Refugee Rights:
In collaboration with Bristol Refugee Rights I made an animation which was chosen to be part of a film screening at the MShed cinema in Bristol. I helped to organise the event, which involved the
coordination of a team of graphic designers, charity workers and refugees from BRR. I then was on a Q&A panel at the screening.

2017
Aardman Animation:
As part of a team from Bath Spa University I helped design an interactive display in collaboration with Aardman Animations, featuring the character ‘Morph’. This involved giving a presentation outlining our designs to Peter Lord, the creator of Morph.

2014-2015
Arts and Crafts Club Leader:
I lead a school lunchtime club for ages 11-13. This involved devising and conducting projects in tie- dye, weaving, mosaic, screen printing and sculpture.

2013-2014
School Yearbook Managing Director:
I instructed a team of 22 students which involved organising weekly meetings and design sessions using the software’s Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. I oversaw the layout of the publication and facilitated the communication between sub-groups.

2012-2014
Riding for the Disabled:
I volunteered for two years to help children with disabilities learn to ride horses. This experience enhanced my skills in both encouragement and reassurance, as well as giving me an appreciation for the abilities and resilience of children.

2013
Primary school volunteer:
Helping with lunch time activities in foundation years (ages 3-4).

2013
Summer Camp Student Host:
Leading activity groups and teaching English to international students.

2013
Young Enterprise Creative Director:
I was responsible for the design of promotional material and market stands, winning three design awards at regional Young Enterprise fairs.

Other Experience

2018
Sam’s Café - Primrose Hill, London:
I worked as an assistant chef preparing high-quality food. I was able to cope well in this fast paced
environment, whilst improving my cooking skills. I was under the instruction of professional chefs,
but relied heavily on my initiative in order to work efficiently and independantly.

2016
The Wimbledon Championships:
Working as a waitress and food preparation assistant proved my abilities in coping under
pressure in this demanding and fast paced role. My leadership and communication skills were also demonstrated within the team environment.

2015-2016
Jericho Cafe, Oxford:
Working as a waitress and barista whilst also serving at the till and assisting in food preparation.

Achievements:

Award: ‘Consistent enthusiasm and high-quality work’:
End of first year degree course award. This was one in four awards in a year group of 80 based on performance and attitude towards work throughout the year.

Business Award:
For an independent business proposal I was awarded both a monetary grant and free access to an online course called ‘The Business of Creativity’ by Creative Women International. This course has developed my knowledge and skills in business and given me confidence in my communication and strategy within the creative industry.

Art Scholarship:
This was awarded in Sixth form based on ongoing performance and a portfolio of work. In being awarded this, I stood as an ambassador of art for the school. This involved helping with exhibitions, art dinners, and hosting private views. I now return to the school to speak to current students about their future in art and design.

Interests:

I enjoy outdoor activities including hiking, river swimming and cycle touring. I cycled across the Rhodope mountain range in Bulgaria in summer 2017, carrying camping equipment and food. I am currently teaching myself to play the piano and learning to cook Middle Eastern recipes.
