Guitar (and Ukulele!) lessons tailored to you by composer/jazz musician in London ONLINE!

Methodology

I tailor lessons to the student and am happy teaching using sheet music and by ear. I think every musician should learn to do both so I encourage ear training/active listening, sight reading and transcription in lessons and as homework. I tailor lessons to the student with my own transcriptions and teaching material and a selection of my favourite teaching books. I am happy to work through specific material if provided by the student.

I tailor lessons to the student with a a balance between enabling the student to commit to their practice by laying out clear goals and expectations, and presenting enjoyable lessons with a laid-back attitude that give full consideration to enabling the student’s enthusiasm for music and sound to grow.

I enjoy working with students who are enthusiastic, whether with the simple goal of enjoying their music or greater aspirations for a career in music (not that the two are mutually exclusive!). I like teaching because it is challenging and requires the teacher to adapt to the student and to kindle their enthusiasm.

Experience

I am a composer and musician with over 10 years experience with a BA (hons) in Popular Music. I have composed music for film, theatre, art installations and radio/podcasts and have toured Europe as a jazz bassist. I developed to become the musician I am today by expanding my musicality through teachers, some more typical than others. I am an enthusiastic music educator, applying over 10 years of experience. I teach piano, keyboard and synthesizers up to an intermediate level.
I am interested in teaching both adults and children. I can help you prepare for school music exams, Rock School Grades, ABRSM Grades and Music Theory exams. I can teach many different styles such as Rock, Blues, Pop, Metal, Funk, Folk, Jazz whatever you want!

Perfect! I was very impressed at how organised and prepared Simon was for our trial lesson, and all the advice he offered, along with detailed after lesson notes. He has a lot of enthusiasm and clearly a lot of experience in teaching and getting the best out of people. Really enjoyed my lesson and got a lot out of it!

Simon's response

She Peng is a good player of Intermediate level and can move her left hand intelligently to find the easiest fingering of chords. She is also aware of her tendency to rest the ukuleles weight on the bridge of her left index finger and with some experiments to assess how the weight of the ukulele is being held by this hand, has started to try to put more weight on the pad of her left thumb on the back of the neck. This will enable her to change chords without the ukulele neck dipping when she changes chords. When practising she is being mindful of how the weight of the ukulele lies in her left hand and to use the thumb on the back of the neck as a reset position. She is also going to practice playing songs standing up in the kitchen any time she is waiting for water to boil to make sure that the majority of the weight of the ukulele is being held by the ukulele being wedged by her right wrist. We looked at 'Come Away With Me' by Norah Jones which She Peng was playing well by the end of the lesson. She knows she needs to practice playing it in time with a metronome, slowly at first. Try emphasising the downbeats and making sure the crotchets line up with the beat when she plays them. Looking to the future in the songs she would like to learn from this "The Ukulele Playlist: Jazz" purple book, I suggested she learns "Hit the Road Jack" as it provides some new 7th chords and a more up-tempo song. She can work towards "Lullaby of Birdland" which has flat and more complex chords. As well as playing chords to learn these song charts, we looked at learning to pluck the melody to Imperial Death March. We used classical guitar method to use the pulgar (thumb) and indice (index finger) on the right hand to play the melody resting on the E and A string. This enabled her to mute the strings when they weren't playing and to play faster. She also utilised her left hand fretting technique of a finger per fret/4-finger technique which we practiced in the "Flea Exercise", to find her way when playing further up the neck when the melody jumped to the 7th fret. Next time we can look at more fingerpicking methods using the indice and medio fingers together to play faster and look at the rest of this piece. A really great first lesson with an student who is engaged in learning her instrument and improving. Great to see such enthusiasm.

It is my belief that Simon is a first-class professional, having first worked with him appropriately 10 years ago.

By then it was already clear that he had a keen motivation, positive attitude and strong desire to improve the experience for all parties.

Yet having now started a recent project with him, I can confirm that he has furthered those attributes whilst consistently delivers quality output; particularly with close attention to briefing.

I would recommend Simon as a teacher, a collaborator or a performer with confidence that he will deliver.

Simon has been my double bass teacher. Besides purely technical intricacies of the instrument, he has also been an excellent guide into the world of jazz and helped me understand the how and why of music in general. He is very knowledgeable and open to so many genres and influences - I could not recommend him enough.
