About the lesson

My name's Hazel, I'm a singer, songwriter, and writer, and I believe that everybody is creative. I seek to unlock the natural creativity in all of my students and help them achieve their goals, whether they want to become professional artists or whether they just want to sing or to write for pleasure. In addition to tutoring privately, I run a social enterprise, Inspiring Creations, that teaches groups in schools, libraries and other sections of the community, which is dedicated to the same aims - because I truly believe that creativity is for everybody.

One of the main things Inspiring Creations does is the regular Jazz and Pop singing classes at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, every Thursday between 6.30-8.30pm. This is an open, friendly class, and we've already been asked to perform some gigs! We're always looking for new members - even people who think they can't sing (it's a myth - I'll teach you how!), so do pop in for a free taster session.

As a musician, I've worked with ex-members of the band Portishead, and have been recently asked to support Sloan Wainwright (Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright's aunt) at one of her upcoming UK dates. I'm very involved in the local community of Croydon and am running various workshops at the upcoming Purley Festival in summer 2011.

I believe that you, as a student, need to respect your own talent and find the teacher that's right for you. That's why I offer free consultations for both private lessons and the singing club. It's important to learn in an environment where you feel comfortable, nurtured, but challenged as well. So if you come for a consultation and decide the chemistry isn't right, no worries - it will always save you time in the long run to find the right teacher.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach singing, songwriting and some basic music theory. I run a social enterprise, Inspiring Creations, which believes creativity is for everybody - because I truly believe that everyone is creative - sometimes you just need a little help to unlock your natural talents! As part of Inspiring Creations, I also run a weekly singing club at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, and I also teach Creative Writing (as well as music-making) in libraries, schools and other settings.

Because I started life out as an English student, I also take on pupils who want to improve their English Literature and English Language skills at GCSE, A Level, and University Level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Certificate in Music Studies leading to BMus (Jazz and Pop), Goldsmiths, University of London - currently studying since 2010.
ABRSM Grade 5 Piano
MA English - University of Sussex, Merit
BA English - Royal Holloway, University of London, 1st class honours

- How much do you charge?

I offer a free half hour consultation at my home for all pupils. For pupils under 12, I like to consult with both the student and their parent(s) to find out what they want to gain from singing lessons. If we agree to work together, then the charge is £30 for 1 hour, £16 for half an hour.
For my singing club at the Fairfield Halls, I offer a free 2 hour taster workshop to all new students. From then on, the price is £11 per 2 hour class, although I am looking at bringing in a discounting system for students who book a term in advance.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at home in South Croydon - please have a look at my contact details.

I also teach at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, every Thursday 6.30-8.30pm.

- When are you available?

I am currently available:

Mondays 2.00 - 5.00pm
Tuesdays - 6.00pm - 9.00pm
Wednesdays 2.00pm - 7.00pm
Thursdays - 10am - 12noon
Fridays - 2.00pm- 6.00pm
Saturdays - 10am - 12noon.

However these are subject to change.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities - from early years up to retirees.

For singing, I focus on general musicianship development rather than exam preparation, however, I am looking into the RockSchool exam system and the possibility of teaching these grades.

For writing, again, I focus on general authorship development - the best exam you can pass as a writer is to get published!

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My personal message to students is:

Respect your talent, at whatever stage it's at - whether it's established or emerging. Do this by looking after yourself - your body is the most amazing instrument there is; practising and learning new repetoire, to challenge yourself and to make sure you don't get bored; learn to love scales and theory - good knowledge of these will help you immensely as you develop your musicianship. And make sure that you work with a teacher who will get you to where you want to be.

About Hazel

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching individuals and community groups pretty much full-time for the last three years, although I started out teaching over ten years ago. I currently teach individuals privately at home, and I also teach groups all over London, including locally at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon.
I have worked with early years (under 5s), pupils at primary and secondary schools, speakers with English as an Additional Language, adults, retirees, and adults and young people with learning and physical disabilities. I have created bespoke programmes tailored to students' individual needs and am happy to do this for either groups or individuals.
As a singer-songwriter and performer, I have been commissioned to create songs and music for conferences, and musical resources for charities.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

Prior to my acceptance at Goldsmiths University, I trained with Lori Joachim Fredrics, previous Singing Lecturer at Kingston University, Surrey.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to -
The Musicians Union
MusicLeader London (a professional development association for musicians working with schools and community groups)
Sound Sense (another professional development organisation to ensure musicians adhere to best practice when working with schools and community groups)
NAME - The National Assocation of Musicians in Eduction
NAWE - The National Association of Writers in Education

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students' ages range for early 20s to mid-70s! Some of my older students have found that singing helps their general health, whether they're breathing better, speaking more clearly and more loudly, or just feeling generally better in themselves.
