About the lesson
If you or your child is struggling to read or spell I can help you in 5- 10 sessions. As a specialist teacher and coach with 30 years experience, I use an approach which is easy to follow, quick to learn and best of all it is fun!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in Reading and Spelling. I work with many students with dyslexia.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Honours Degree from Southampton University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and an OCR Certificate Level 5 in SPLD (Dyslexia)
- How much do you charge?
Please contact me to arrange an initial consultation, for which there is no charge. We can then discuss your child's needs and decide on the optimum number of sessions, depending on his/her specific requirements. With reading, many students achieve rapid results in as few as 6-8 sessions. You can also learn the spelling strategy in 6 sessions and feel confident to start improving your spelling with no extra homework. I also offer follow up support for parents.
- Where do you teach?
I am located in Hardwick, 4 miles west of Cambridge close to the A14, A428 and M11. Easy access from Huntingdon, Bury St Edmunds, Royston, Newmarket, Ely and Saffron Walden. Private parking is available. I use a quiet room set aside just for teaching and also have a room where parents may wait if they wish.
- When are you available?
Term Times Tuesday - Friday 10 -7. School Holidays Tuesday - Friday 10 - 5. NB Schools will often agree to a child coming out of school for specialist help.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
7 years to Adults
- Do you have a personal message for students?
You can become a fluent reader and learn to spell any word confidently. And it is easier and more fun than you might think!

About Helen
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught in the classroom in state and private schools for 25 years with Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 children. I then worked for 5 years as a Dyslexia specialist in school working one to one with children up to the age of 13. For the last 2 years I have been coaching children and adults of all ages who are currently experiencing difficulties with reading, spelling or writing. I have a unique combination of skills, training and experience and have a caring and thoughtful approach.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an Enhanced CRB Disclosure
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
PATOSS (Professional Association Of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties)
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently coaching people between the ages of 8 and 51. They are all different. Typically they have been using learning techniques that don't work effectively for them. It is very rewarding to watch them begin to read, spell and write with confidence.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
This course has built his confidence with reading, unblocked his "stuckness" and allowed him to enjoy reading. It is like he has found the "Reading James". We have been extremely impressed by the warmth, fun and relaxed atmosphere. James enjoyed learning to read better and the results have been amazing. We (James included ) are very thankful and we would certainly recommend.
Our child stopped being bothered by difficult words and spelling and started reading and writing freely again. The improvement is masked and noticeable. We noticed what a positive and well structured approach the sessions provided. I greatly appreciated the refusal to "diagnose" and the underlying thinking behind it (i.e build a child's confidence and engagement with the subject rather than deflating and undermining both parent and child). Our child flourished with your gentle encouragement.
She found a new way/ approach to spelling that works for her. This has given the whole family a new way of looking at her difficulties and made us realise we don't have to continue in the old repetitive ways- a new approach for us all- more fun with words.
An enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere which helps you learn more easily and quickly. Finding out that spelling is not as hard as I thought.
The parental invovement and discussion is very good and made the programme as instructive for parents as children. She enjoyed the whole course and thought it was fun. She actually enjoyed being more confident and expressive with reading.
Thankyou. An empowering experience.. Ability to learn words in a way that makes sense for her.
It gives a different angle to spelling than that taught at school. I find imagining what a word looks like really powerful.
Thank you - your kind and calm manner has really helped him take on all the useful tips you had for him. He is now happy tackling English again.
She has started term with confidence and your strategies are definitely helping her.
You seem to have an impressive effect on Sam. The first thing he did last night during study time at home was to pull out the spelling words and follow your process. We have struggled in the past to get him to follow the process of ... say, look, cover, write ,c heck and other forms of spelling work - but you have finally hit on something that has triggered not only interest but even action.
