I teach clients via Skype both in the UK and worldwide. Most time zones can be accommodated. I record your session as an MP3 file and place it on Dropbox for you to retrieve and use in further home practice. I email your exercises or LAMDA examination pieces or place them into your Dropbox folder. I have high quality audio and video facilities and have been teaching this way for over three years. I have an iMac so would be happy to work with FaceTime as well as Skype.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I have 35 years' experience of working with children and adults of all ages. My unique range of qualifications and experience means that I provide a complete package for all of your speech and communication needs. My degree in Linguistics from The University of Nottingham means that I have the training in phonetics, articulation, phonology and prosody, which is required for accent work and speech therapy. My London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art elocution training and teaching qualification means that I am able to take your speech right through from speech therapy to fluency, clarity and personal communication skills. Training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy enables me to equip my clients with emotional and psychological tools to use in their communication journey, as well as the practical speech production.
Over the years I have developed a wide range of tired and tested methods. No two clients are the same, so the work is always tailored to your needs. Clients may come to me because they have a speech impediment and social phobia, or they need to learn an RP accent and have public speaking training. They might need to polish their speech and then decide to take LAMDA exams just for fun. I work with aphasic children and dyslexic adults, people with stammers or foreign accents. Many of my clients have a dread of public speaking. All of your needs can be met in one place with experience, insight and compassion.
Clients frequently start having lessons because they have a more therapeutic need such as public speaking phobia, a regional accent or speech impediment, and then stay to take LAMDA examinations and discover an enjoyable and productive hobby. Both adults and children often stay for years as they discover the breadth of skills they can develop.
Our sessions are hard work but very enjoyable. For each client we start with discussing your communication needs and undertaking an assessment. I then devise a plan of work which adapts and changes as your skills improve. I use video extensively in the sessions for instant feedback, and all adults' sessions are recorded as an MP3 file so you can build a library of lessons to which you can refer and which enable you to monitor your progress. I email exercises which clients use in further home practice.
I also work extensively with Skype, and I find that this is an excellent medium for using with elocution, accent reduction and LAMDA examinations. All Skype clients have their session recorded as an MP3 file in the same way as the clients whom I see in person.
All of my work is bespoke, so I devise individual programmes to help everyone to have clear, confident and polished speech and to be able to communicate with poise and elegance. My YouTube channel ExpertAccent will give you an idea of the work that I do, and you can have a look of some of my young clients performing for you. You don't need to suffer in silence when there is high quality help here to see you through.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have 35 years' experience of working with children from age 3 and adults of all ages. I have taught at "The Swansea School of Speech and Drama", "The Nottingham Academy of Speech, Dance and Drama" and founded "The Cardiff Academy of Speech and Drama" (now just called "Cardiff Speech & Drama") in 1984. In 1885 I set up "The Play Machine Children's Theatre Company" to perform shows and workshops which toured the country. I am a member of Equity. I have taught elocution and LAMDA examinations at "St John's College" and "The Cathedral School", both private schools in Cardiff.
My experience is vast and broad. I work with general elocution to improve clients's speech and focus on accent reduction, both native British accents and foreign speakers; I coach public speaking skills and specialise in helping those with public speaking and social phobias; I provide speech therapy and stammering help with my own personally devised and highly effective methods. I teach acting and provide coaching for Drama School entry and I enter people of all ages (so far from age 4 to age 52!) for LAMDA exams at my own private centre, and for LAMDA and RADA exams throughout the country. I also work with professional actors to improve their skills. My clients are business people, politicians, doctors, actors, children of all ages and I have been doing this for three and a half decades.
