- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a BA (Hons) 2i in English and Linguistics from the University of Nottingham and am a fully qualified elocution teacher. I have the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) Licentiate Teachers' Diploma, and am one of the few people to have passed the LAMDA Associate Public Speaking Diploma. I am an experienced British Sign Language interpreter, a qualified ILEX paralegal and have trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

- How much do you charge?

Training is either through regular weekly half hour sessions or short notice sessions.
Weekly half hour evening sessions for adults are £19/half hour and for children they start at £17/half hour. These fees are payable half a term in advance and there is a waiting list.
Short notice intensive sessions can be booked a week in advance and are £140 for two hours or £190 for three on weekday mornings, or £190 for two and £250 for three on Sunday afternoons.
Skype sessions can be booked at short notice and cost £70/hour for adults and £35/half hour for children. These can often be booked just a few days in advance.
Off-site training at a venue of your choice starts at £300 for up to three hours and depends upon the distance to travel and the number of people involved. Please get in touch to discuss your needs and formalise fees.

- Where do you teach?

I work from home and have an office in my house in Canton in Cardiff. Most of my training takes place here. I also travel to a client's place of work. I can travel to Newport, Bridgend, Pontypridd on weekday mornings and as far as Swansea, Gloucester, Bristol or Cheltenham during school holidays when I don't have to be back for my regular classes. Clients can access my training from anywhere in the world via Skype.

- When are you available?

Regular evening sessions take place Monday to Friday 4.30pm to 8.30pm.
Short notice intensive sessions take place in the mornings on Monday to Friday starting at 10am and on Sunday afternoons from 3pm.
Skype sessions can take place from 8am to 3pm daily or as part of the regular evening sessional. I don't usually work on Saturdays but will see corporate clients for a full training day if required.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Age 3 plus up to adult. I work with beginners and professionals. I teach all ages and all abilities, regardless of level of disability or need.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

LAMDA examinations of all levels, up to PCertLAM and LSDE, RADA examinations at all levels. I also assist clients with GCSE and A level Drama.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I teach clients via Skype both in the UK and worldwide. Most time zones can be accommodated. I record your session as an MP3 file and place it on Dropbox for you to retrieve and use in further home practice. I email your exercises or LAMDA examination pieces or place them into your Dropbox folder. I have high quality audio and video facilities and have been teaching this way for over three years. I have an iMac so would be happy to work with FaceTime as well as Skype.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I have 35 years' experience of working with children and adults of all ages. My unique range of qualifications and experience means that I provide a complete package for all of your speech and communication needs. My degree in Linguistics from The University of Nottingham means that I have the training in phonetics, articulation, phonology and prosody, which is required for accent work and speech therapy. My London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art elocution training and teaching qualification means that I am able to take your speech right through from speech therapy to fluency, clarity and personal communication skills. Training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy enables me to equip my clients with emotional and psychological tools to use in their communication journey, as well as the practical speech production.

Over the years I have developed a wide range of tired and tested methods. No two clients are the same, so the work is always tailored to your needs. Clients may come to me because they have a speech impediment and social phobia, or they need to learn an RP accent and have public speaking training. They might need to polish their speech and then decide to take LAMDA exams just for fun. I work with aphasic children and dyslexic adults, people with stammers or foreign accents. Many of my clients have a dread of public speaking. All of your needs can be met in one place with experience, insight and compassion.

Clients frequently start having lessons because they have a more therapeutic need such as public speaking phobia, a regional accent or speech impediment, and then stay to take LAMDA examinations and discover an enjoyable and productive hobby. Both adults and children often stay for years as they discover the breadth of skills they can develop.

Our sessions are hard work but very enjoyable. For each client we start with discussing your communication needs and undertaking an assessment. I then devise a plan of work which adapts and changes as your skills improve. I use video extensively in the sessions for instant feedback, and all adults' sessions are recorded as an MP3 file so you can build a library of lessons to which you can refer and which enable you to monitor your progress. I email exercises which clients use in further home practice.

I also work extensively with Skype, and I find that this is an excellent medium for using with elocution, accent reduction and LAMDA examinations. All Skype clients have their session recorded as an MP3 file in the same way as the clients whom I see in person.

All of my work is bespoke, so I devise individual programmes to help everyone to have clear, confident and polished speech and to be able to communicate with poise and elegance. My YouTube channel ExpertAccent will give you an idea of the work that I do, and you can have a look of some of my young clients performing for you. You don't need to suffer in silence when there is high quality help here to see you through.

About Helen

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 35 years' experience of working with children from age 3 and adults of all ages. I have taught at "The Swansea School of Speech and Drama", "The Nottingham Academy of Speech, Dance and Drama" and founded "The Cardiff Academy of Speech and Drama" (now just called "Cardiff Speech & Drama") in 1984. In 1885 I set up "The Play Machine Children's Theatre Company" to perform shows and workshops which toured the country. I am a member of Equity. I have taught elocution and LAMDA examinations at "St John's College" and "The Cathedral School", both private schools in Cardiff.
My experience is vast and broad. I work with general elocution to improve clients's speech and focus on accent reduction, both native British accents and foreign speakers; I coach public speaking skills and specialise in helping those with public speaking and social phobias; I provide speech therapy and stammering help with my own personally devised and highly effective methods. I teach acting and provide coaching for Drama School entry and I enter people of all ages (so far from age 4 to age 52!) for LAMDA exams at my own private centre, and for LAMDA and RADA exams throughout the country. I also work with professional actors to improve their skills. My clients are business people, politicians, doctors, actors, children of all ages and I have been doing this for three and a half decades.

A number of undergraduate and post-graduate students who are working on interview and elocution skills in order to improve their prospects in the job market.
A politician whose accent is preventing him from communicating with his constituents.
A local authority worker with a crippling stammer.
Three different children with dyspraxia, 4 with dyslexia, a number with aphasia and speech therapy needs.
A teenager and an undergraduate crippled with social anxiety who are starting to blossom.
A large number of children and teenagers whose parents want them to improve their speech through general elocution and lose their local accent.
Many children and adults taking LAMDA exams.

My Skype clients include:
A lady in Spain wishing to learn an RP accent for her work with an international company.
Students in Hong Kong and New Zealand polishing their accent.
A solicitor in England taking LAMDA examinations.
