Helena - Wimbledon - Violin

Methodology

I am a professional violinist and teacher and love the diversity of what I do; each area of work feeds the other.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Violin from beginner standard to advanced level (post Grade 8), Viola up to Grade 5 standard, Chamber Music, Music Theory and Musicianship.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have an MA in Music from Selwyn College, Cambridge and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance from the Royal College of Music. Recently, I was awarded a distinction for a certificate in intermediate level Kodaly Musicianship from the British Kodaly Academy.

Regular CPD undertaken: ESTA international conference 2013, ABRSM conferences and training days, CPD for Tri-borough Music Hub and THAMES.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35/hour or £21/30 mins. I charge £40/hour for lessons within 20 minutes travel of my home.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at home, in Wimbledon, and will consider teaching at students' homes within 20 minutes' travel time of my home. Students may come from Wimbledon, Raynes Park, New Malden, Kingston, Putney.

- When are you available?

I am available most Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. These times are subject to change depending on my performance work but I aim to keep changes to a minimum.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach age four upwards from beginner to post Grade 8. I teach adults as well and recently contributed to a violin refresher course for adults published by Music Sales.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I mainly prepare my students for ABRSM exams and find that they provide a very good, comprehensive basis for education but am very happy to teach with other goals in mind or simply for fun.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching since 2000. Throughout this time and alongside a career as an orchestral violinist I have taught Violin, Viola, beginner Piano, Music Theory and Musicianship privately. Many of my students achieve merits and distinctions in exams and gain places at top independent and grammar schools.

Through my role as a strings correspondent for Music Teacher magazine I am continually assessing the latest resources and trends in string teaching. This reflective approach has without doubt been a great benefit to my teaching.

I have taught one on one and small group lessons as a peripatetic member of staff in schools and for Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service (THAMES) and have also delivered Wider Opportunities for Westminster Music Service and THAMES. After leaving music college I also worked as a part time Music Specialist with responsibility for classroom music, singing, external activities and music for school productions.

Alongside teaching I perform regularly with top British orchestras such as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and City of London Sinfonia and also take part in chamber music at small venues in London, the southeast and at festivals throughout the UK.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

After reading Music at Cambridge I trained as a violinist with Yossi Zivoni at the Royal College of Music where I was supported by an award from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the Musicians Union and the European String Teachers Association.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Currently I am teaching several young adults as beginners as well as some bright young children. Two of the adults are in IT and met and discovered their passion for violin as housemates. They have been widening my horizons by requesting to learn music from the latest computer games and I have been widening theirs by introducing them to Handel, Holst and Rimsky Korsakov. Another, who is training to become a luthier, is on the way to fulfilling an ambition to learn all the instruments of the orchestra and arrived for his first lesson at a good Grade 3 standard having taught himself - very unusual but a rather welcome change!

I was so impressed with Madeleine's playing expecially after such few lessons. However I have to say your solo was the highlight of the afternoon. Thanks again.

I just transcribed the audio data from my visit to your school in February and I am surprised by the way that you have taught the riffs. I have listened to most of our examples so far (from 75 students) and have transcribed the majority of them and your teaching is exceptional (maybe the best we have collected!).
