I don't have a method: I vary my methods depending on the needs and personality of the learner. I've taught so many diverse students with so many different targets that I always have a plan B, and C and D.... and if they aren't working, I improvise. In the first few lessons, I establish the needs of my students, their prior knowledge and their learning styles as thoroughly and precisely as possible. Then I can create a personalised course that will help them improve . All of which sounds seriously intense, which it is, but I am a wildly enthusiastic optimist with a irrepressible sense of humour. I expect my lessons to be fun as well as transformative.
I began teaching in 1983, and have extensive experience at universities in Britain, Italy and Cyprus; in professional communication training; at private language schools in Greece, Italy and Albania; in secondary and adult education in the UK; and in online tuition. I am particularly skilled in developing writing skills and preparing students for examinations. Having taught so many different people, ranging from a teenager excluded from school for violent behaviour to the training manager of Barclays Bank in Spain, I am adept at adapting my approach to meet the particular needs of my students. I aim to encourage, reassure and, above all, inspire.
In the 1980s I taught English in Greece, and at the University of Bari, Italy. While I was researching my doctorate at the University of York, I began giving individual tuition to GCSE students.
In the 1990s I became an expert in communication training, working with European and Arab business executives, and training the Swedish contingent of the UN peacekeeping force in Bosnia in media relations and press conferencing. I was part of the team that introduced English for Academic Purposes at the University of Cyprus, creating specific courses for undergraduates in Economics, Business, History and Education over four years. The online academic writing course that I developed from these materials won the Education Planet Top Site Award in 1999. I returned to Britain to teach at the University of Lancaster and St Martin's College.
In 2000, I gained my PGCE and began teaching English in secondary schools. I soon specialised in Film Studies, and became an A Level examiner and moderator. I was head of department at a large comprehensive school for six and a half years, before I resigned so that I would have more time to devote to the book I am writing on the film director Otto Preminger.
Recently, I have worked in Albania, Italy and at the University of Central Lancashire, but have been concentraing more and more on online tuition. In 2015 I was the first English tutor on the Erasmus+ programme for students at European universities, creating materials and lesson plans. I have also helped numerous students prepare for GCSE and A Level Exams.
One of the best professors ever !!! Professor Martin helped me to prepare for the IELTS exam and afterthat my English was better, especially my speaking and my writing skills were improved. He knows how to motivate students. Personally my English lessons were cool and I had a lot of fun !
I met Martin two years ago in Parma at InLingua School.
He was my teacher for two years and I improved my british english because of him.
In my opinion, he is a great teacher, being very prepared and having significant skills in grammar, conversation, history, geography, politics, music, cinema and many other interesting matters such as sport, ecology, etc.
I'm really disappointend because he's no longer in Parma (Italy) to teaching english and I wish him all the best for his career because he deserves it.
Professor Martin is the real super prof. He is extremely intelligent and knows how to make his students want to learn. Martin is creative and provides a variety of learning materials for students of different learning styles. He is very enthusiastic and passionate about teaching and students will always find his classes interesting and joyful.
Martin was my English teacher for - sadly - just a couple of weeks. This was nevertheless very well spent time: I had to learn a lot from him and it was always fun. He's very dedicated, has a great knowledge of language and will let you see the matter from a completely different perspective. I would recommend him especially if your level is at least intermediate.
