Learning is most successful when it’s enjoyable. This is always the starting point.
Each lesson will focus on a particular skill or set of skills and will include recommendations for personalised practice in your own time. I usually use a combination of material from a textbook and supplementary content that I provide, such as reading material and podcasts.
Whatever you find most challenging – perhaps it’s related to fluency in speaking, accuracy in grammar or building your vocabulary – I have almost certainly encountered the issue before and will be able to suggest a variety of ways in which you can develop your confidence and skills. Every student is different and I get to know each person’s interests, strengths and areas for improvement.
There is no shortage of interesting topics that we can cover and this will depend largely on where your interests lie. Films, music, history, politics and nature are just a few of the things I love. Over the years I have come to learn about many new and fascinating topics from my students.
I am happy to provide one-off support with grammar, writing, pronunciation or any aspects of the language you are finding tricky. Equally, a short course over the space of a few weeks can be a good way of boosting motivation for self study. However, over the years it has been particularly rewarding to work with students over an extended period. This has always involved helping them to achieve their personal goals, whether that’s securing the exam grades they need (primarily FCE, CAE, CPE - now called B2, C1, C2 - and IELTS), completing academic assignments successfully or simply improving their ability to express themselves in English.
At the beginning of lockdown, I discovered that online lessons worked very well. Not only did my students enjoy them but many said they found them just as good as, or in some aspects even better than, classroom learning. All my lessons are therefore now online.
I currently have vacancies for adult students only.
Over the last 25+ years, I have taught students from around the world, from beginners to advanced, in one-to-one and group settings. During this time, I have worked at a number of language schools in London, Edinburgh and Prague, as well as giving private lessons.
In addition to being an English teacher, I am a composer, so I take on a limited number of students at any given time. The benefit of this is that it allows me get to know each student individually and understand their needs. I find the combination of writing music and teaching English a great way of staying inspired and fresh in both parts of my work. I have had the pleasure of teaching people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including doctors, politicians, university students, musicians, entrepreneurs, teachers and many more. I enjoy getting to know every new student, whatever their personal circumstances.
For those of you who are interested in my academic credentials, I am a Cambridge graduate (BA Honours, Music), a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language and a recipient of a Diploma in Media Composition from the Film Music Institute of Los Angeles (gained remotely), all of which were obtained quite some time ago!
I have also been an examiner for leading UK exam body, OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA).
For those of you interested in the quirkier details, my favourite tree is an English oak, my favourite place is the Scottish Borders and, more controversially, my favourite biscuit is a Jaffa Cake.
RSA Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults, Bell School of Languages, Cambridge
BA Honours (Music), Clare College, Cambridge University
I had Philip as a teacher when I was in Edinburgh, and he was a really good teacher (and I mean it). Even when we had to cope with the lockdown, he was still here for us by doing video calls and preparing funny tests to keep us busy while practicing our English. He also helped me with a cover letter I had to write. He will always take the time to talk to and understand the needs of the student to help them as much as he can. Thank you, Philip !
Philip is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, encouraging his students to do their best. His lessons are extremely well organised, and he stimulates you to pay attention for the whole class by making his classes entertaining. So, students can improve their English while having fun. He is very professional and is always willing to help his students in class, but also outside. I am really grateful to Philip for the progress I have made and the confidence I feel now with the English language. For all of this, I strongly recommend taking English classes with him.

I was Philip's student for 3 months. He is a gifted and funny teacher and a passionate one.
His classes cover both formal and informal English, which was exactly what I needed. It was a truly great experience!
How was my experience studying with Philip? Fantastic. He doesn't just tell you the rules and grammar points, but makes you understand and comprehend the language without memorising and repeating boring stuff. What is more, he makes your learning process meaningful so you don't forget what you learn. I mean, I am not the kind of student who revises her previous notes but I still remember his classes and what he taught me. He doesn't only teach the correct English, but also the common and natural way of communicating in the language so you develop kind of an English brain. Literally, you get to perceive the world and express yourself as an English person would. Huge variety of activities. To sum up, his classes are worth every penny you spend on them.
I have lots of good memories of Philip's lessons. He always finds a good and funny example to explain what we need to know. Laughs are included in our lessons, then English is easier to learn. We also take part in different and interesting conversations. I've enjoyed having classes with Philip so much.
Very good teacher. I really have learned a lot with his classes in which we also had a good time. He created a great atmosphere in the class and we had fun while learning English interactively. I really enjoyed learning with a teacher like Philip.
I did lessons with Philip for some months and it was amazing. He is incredibly professional and friendly at the same time. His lessons were both entertaining and informative since he is a very well-qualified teacher and he is also full of wit. He is able to make the third conditional simple and understandable and this is wonderful. I strongly recommend his lessons because he is the best English teacher I’ve ever met and you’ll really enjoy them.
Classes with Philip are great! I have learnt a lot with him, not just vocabulary and grammar, but also to express myself better and to gain enough confidence to do so. His classes are dynamic and cheerful, and always with good laughs. He knows how to keep harmony and he is always predisposed to help you in any matter.
I’m really glad to have been one of his students.
I have enjoyed every single minute of Philip's classes and trust me, I'm not the only one. I've listened to a lot of students saying how much they missed him when they left his class. Whether you need to improve your writing, speaking, grammar or improve your IELTS score, Philip can definitely give you a hand. His classes are good fun, full of anecdotes that will help you to learn lots of new expressions and vocabulary that you will use in your everyday life. If these reasons are not enough, and you’re into Harry Potter, I challenge you to out-geek him about it!
Philip is a very great teacher. He can teach deep and difficult grammar and also make the lessons enjoyable and good fun. He has a great sense of humour, which helps us to learn a new language. In his classes I achieved a very good knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary. I cannot recommend his lessons highly enough!
