I believe not just in imparting the skill of communication but of accurate communication based on sound grammatical knowledge. In the sixth form and beyond, I regard literature as a highly desirable aspect of the learning process. Those who are not natural linguists need to be encouraged to see patterns rather than problems. There is no set pattern for a lesson other than recapitulation of the previous lesson's content followed by a combination of tasks involving reading, listening, speaking and writing.
I have an Cambridge M.A. in Modern Languages and a London Ph.D. in French. I have been a Chief Examiner as well as a Head of Department for many years and have written study ais for A Level students which have run to 6 editions since 1991.
