Experienced languages teacher Hilary offers tuition in North Gosforth area in French, German and Spanish from beginners to A Level

Methodology

As a secondary teacher with experience of adult education and private tuition, I believe that competence in one or more foreign languages is very important for academic, work and leisure purposes.

- How much do you charge?

I generally charge between £25 per hour for individual tuition in my own home or £28 in the home of the tutee up to and including GCSE. For 'A' level tuition I charge between £30 and £33 per hour.
I would prefer to teach within a radius of 10-15 miles from my home.
I would offer reduced rates for small groups.
I am also willing to teach within businesses and have experience in this area.

- Where do you teach?

I am willing to teach either in my own home or in the home of the student or at a workplace.
I prefer to teach north of the Tyne within 10-15 miles of Newcastle but am willing to discuss other options.

- When are you available?

I am currently available during the day and in the evenings Monday to Thursday (except Monday evenings)

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach ages 11-18 up to GCSE and 'A' Level.
I am also happy to tutor adults and older Primary age children.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am friendly and understand the needs of students as I have experience of a range of GCSE/IGCSE and 'A' level syllabuses in Languages.
I consider the work that I do with students to be a partnership, and would expect that they put as much effort into this as I do in order to make good progress.
My approach is centred on the individual targets and ability of my students.

I would highly recommend Hilary to anyone wanting to learn a language. I was a complete beginner but with Hilary's help and patience, I feel confident to practice what I have learnt when on holiday. Hilary quickly assessed my learning style and has developed a range or resources to help me learn, including some fun and innovative games!

Interview with Hilary

QUESTION 01 | 08
Do you speak these languages fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Hilary — I speak these languages fluently because I was inspired mainly by my teachers at school but also by teachers of adult education and I have always had a strong interest in language learning. I am fascinated by the variety of languages in the world and how we approach language learning in different ways.

QUESTION 02 | 08
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the languages’ culture?
Hilary — With regard to France, I consider the singer Edith Piaf to be emblematic of the French culture as she rose from poverty and tragedy to become famous and was able to express the depth of her emotions in such a unique, authentic style.

With regard to German, I would consider Konrad Adenauer to be a major figure as West Germany’s first Chancellor after the Second World War, as he played a key role in the reintegration of Germany into European and international affairs.

With respect to Spain, I have to mention Rafael Nadal who is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won 14 Grand Slam titles and is a great ambassador for the pride of the Spanish people.

QUESTION 03 | 08
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the languages that you particularly like?
Hilary — I admire the French tradition of Bastille Day on 14th July which celebrates the turning point of the French Revolution and the values of Liberté, Égalité and Fraternité.

I love the creativity of compound nouns in German, the longest I know of being
“ Kraftfahrzeugpflichtversicherung” (liability insurance for vehicles).

In Spanish I love Flamenco music which consists of unique and spontaneous expression combining guitar, vocals and rhythm.
QUESTION 04 | 08
Why does speaking these languages matter to you?
Hilary — I have many friends in Europe and want to maintain contact with them as well as to continue to discover more about their culture and customs.

QUESTION 05 | 08
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Hilary — The main difficulties which tend to be experienced by students of a foreign language are in getting to grips with and applying the rules of grammar as well as acquisition of a wide vocabulary. Use of a wide range of visual and audio material as well as direct face to face conversation can greatly help the process of learning.

QUESTION 06 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Hilary — Whilst on placement in Toulouse in South-West France with fellow undergraduates we tried to find ways of meeting more French people with whom to converse and ended up by giving English conversation lessons at the École Vétérinaire to prospective vets in exchange for free horse-riding lessons which were great fun and enabled us to expand our social circle considerably.
QUESTION 07 | 08
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Hilary — My language skills have developed through two six month placements as a student in France and Germany and later as a mature student via a stay with a family in Northern Spain, as well as through regular family holidays to Europe.

QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof in language?

Hilary — I am very well qualified in my chosen languages and believe that my love of language learning is effectively communicated to my tutees at all levels through my enthusiastic approach which targets their individual interests and capabilities.
