I generally charge between £25 per hour for individual tuition in my own home or £28 in the home of the tutee up to and including GCSE. For 'A' level tuition I charge between £30 and £33 per hour.

I would offer reduced rates for small groups.
I am also willing to teach within businesses and have experience in this area.

- Where do you teach?

I am willing to teach either in my own home or in the home of the student or at a workplace.
I prefer to teach north of the Tyne within 10-15 miles of Newcastle but am willing to discuss other options.

- When are you available?

I am currently available during the day and in the evenings Monday to Thursday (except Monday evenings)

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach ages 11-18 up to GCSE and 'A' Level.

I consider the work that I do with students to be a partnership, and would expect that they put as much effort into this as I do in order to make good progress.
My approach is centred on the individual targets and ability of my students.

I would highly recommend Hilary to anyone wanting to learn a language. I was a complete beginner but with Hilary's help and patience, I feel confident to practice what I have learnt when on holiday. Hilary quickly assessed my learning style and has developed a range or resources to help me learn, including some fun and innovative games!

I have been having lessons with Hilary for over a year. She is a superb teacher and makes learning fun. She spends time and thought preparing lessons which cover all aspects of French:- conversation, current affairs, culture and grammar. I’ve learnt loads and gained confidence with Hilary. I can thoroughly recommend her

Hilary is the ideal tutor! She combines warmth and friendliness with excellent linguistic skills and creative teaching methods that make learning fun. She is versatile, having helped my elderly mother who was a total beginner in French and myself, a confirmed francophone. I didn't know who to book when I was first looking for a language tutor. Luckily, I found Hilary's profile! I couldn't have picked a better teacher - down-to-earth and hard-working, going the extra mile for her students, with breathtaking results. I never thought I would hear my old mum speak French! You can put your trust in Hilary 100 percent. She will not only teach you a language but she will make you love it, too! In fact, we think of her as a friend.

Hilary has tutored 2 of my children and they have not only benefited greatly but have also enjoyed the sessions. She is reliable, professional , organised and builds good rapport with her students , I have no hesitation in recommending her as a first class tutor .

Hilary was our daughter's German tutor. She was exceptional and our daughter was so happy to have been taught by Hilary as Hilary could solve any questions asked in simple terms to make her understand easily. Also, whenever my daughter sent questions via email, Hilary helped her straight away via eMail as well.
Our daughter got A* in German in GCSE and she was confident right from the beginning as Hilary was there to help her with any difficult questions.
Hilary was always punctual and she always took extra care to make sure that our daughter understood everything clearly. The classes with Hilary helped her learn German so easily that our daughter rarely spent time outside of the class on German - this allowed her to spend her time on other subjects that she wanted to master.
We have no hesitations in recommending Hilary to anyone and she is definitely a great teacher!

Hilary has taught both of my home educated children. She taught my son A level German and he passed with an A. She has taught my daughter GCSE French and Spanish and she passed with A* in both. Currently, she is preparing my daughter for her first year of A level study in German and French.
Hilary is an excellent tutor, very well organised and her lessons are well prepared with excellent resources. Homework is marked constructively.
Hilary is a warm, trustworthy person with a wealth of teaching experience. She was able to adapt her teaching style so that both of my children reached their full potential as they learn very differently.
I would not hesitate to recommend Hilary to anyone looking for a tutor in French, Spanish or German.

I have been attending a weekly French conversation class with Hilary for twelve months and each session is, without fail, both interesting and stimulating. Her informal and friendly style belies the depth of her knowledge and also her ability to tailor her approach to the level and interest of the student. Every meeting is enjoyable, covering a variety of topics and themes and, at the same time incorporating aspects of grammar in a seamless but very effective manner - a complete contrast from my formal lessons at school.
I recommend Hilary highly to anyone wishing to learn or improve their French in a very stimulating way.

Hilary tutored me for AS and A2 French over 2 years. I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone looking for a language tutor. She is extremely reliable and friendly. She helped me to focus on the areas that needed improvement, whether that be grammar, listening, essay writing etc. She takes great interest in her pupil's success and I really enjoyed my lessons with her.

Money well spent! My A* was directly the result of this excellent tutoring which built my confidence and also enthused me to work hard and achieve at the highest level

Interview with Hilary

QUESTION 01 | 08
Do you speak these languages fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Hilary — I speak these languages fluently because I was inspired mainly by my teachers at school but also by teachers of adult education and I have always had a strong interest in language learning. I am fascinated by the variety of languages in the world and how we approach language learning in different ways.

QUESTION 02 | 08
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the languages’ culture?
Hilary — With regard to France, I consider the singer Edith Piaf to be emblematic of the French culture as she rose from poverty and tragedy to become famous and was able to express the depth of her emotions in such a unique, authentic style.

With regard to German, I would consider Konrad Adenauer to be a major figure as West Germany’s first Chancellor after the Second World War, as he played a key role in the reintegration of Germany into European and international affairs.

With respect to Spain, I have to mention Rafael Nadal who is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won 14 Grand Slam titles and is a great ambassador for the pride of the Spanish people.

QUESTION 03 | 08
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the languages that you particularly like?
Hilary — I admire the French tradition of Bastille Day on 14th July which celebrates the turning point of the French Revolution and the values of Liberté, Égalité and Fraternité.

I love the creativity of compound nouns in German, the longest I know of being
“ Kraftfahrzeugpflichtversicherung” (liability insurance for vehicles).

In Spanish I love Flamenco music which consists of unique and spontaneous expression combining guitar, vocals and rhythm.
QUESTION 04 | 08
Why does speaking these languages matter to you?
Hilary — I have many friends in Europe and want to maintain contact with them as well as to continue to discover more about their culture and customs.

QUESTION 05 | 08
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Hilary — The main difficulties which tend to be experienced by students of a foreign language are in getting to grips with and applying the rules of grammar as well as acquisition of a wide vocabulary. Use of a wide range of visual and audio material as well as direct face to face conversation can greatly help the process of learning.

QUESTION 06 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Hilary — Whilst on placement in Toulouse in South-West France with fellow undergraduates we tried to find ways of meeting more French people with whom to converse and ended up by giving English conversation lessons at the École Vétérinaire to prospective vets in exchange for free horse-riding lessons which were great fun and enabled us to expand our social circle considerably.
QUESTION 07 | 08
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Hilary — My language skills have developed through two six month placements as a student in France and Germany and later as a mature student via a stay with a family in Northern Spain, as well as through regular family holidays to Europe.

QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof in language?

Hilary — I am very well qualified in my chosen languages and believe that my love of language learning is effectively communicated to my tutees at all levels through my enthusiastic approach which targets their individual interests and capabilities.
