In Sixth Form, I tutored GCSE students in English Language and Literature as part of a school-led scheme to encourage Sixth Formers to peer mentor struggling GCSE students, and practice their own skills as a tutor. This experience was invaluable, as it allowed me to build my confidence and practice different learning techniques with very different students. Each had different educational demands, so each of their courses were tailored to make sure their sessions were engaging and enjoyable. Many of my students improved by at least two grades by the end of our ten week course, felt far more confident in their English abilities, and subsequently far better prepared to sit their other GCSE exams. At GCSE level, English is a crucial pass and so it can put students under a lot of stress. As a tutor I would endeavour to alleviate that stress with manageable and effective revision programmes, and help the student feel highly prepared to pass those exams.
Currently, I am a student at the University of Southampton. Having completed a Bachelors in History at the university, I decided to stay on for another year and pursue a Masters, also in History. Since I began university in 2016, my English language skills and writing style have both greatly improved. I feel in a particularly strong position to tutor English due to the nature of my degrees, which pay particular attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. Literature is a great passion of mine and my ability to analyse English literature, including poetry, has only improved since being in at university, thus I would be thrilled to help an English GCSE student find their passion and talent for the subject.
