Jo goes above and beyond for every student. Every class is tailored to your particular needs and she quickly knows how to help you and the course you have decided to do.
I do not know any other teacher that can create a class dynamic like Jo does, and with such an impressive track record of (very) successful students in even the most difficult Cambridge exams, like in my case, Proficiency in English. Thank you Jo!

JoAnne has coached me thoroughly for couple weeks in regards with my IELTS exam, which is required for my GMC registration. To begin with, her method of teaching is an absolute delight and she effortlessly explains all the areas I struggled with. Additionally, she’s very patient while she teaches and she surely helped me in building my confidence. I would highly recommend her to anyone starting at any level.

JoAnne is an excellent teacher. She really prioritizes each student’s needs and design specific lessons accordingly. She offered me a range of learning materials that fits to my expectation perfectly. Her way of teaching is very encouraging too – I now have more confidence with using English and more importantly, I enjoy learning English more! As I do not have any exams that I need to pass, I only have classes one per week, yet I strongly feel that my English improved a lot especially in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation. I cannot recommend enough JoAnne as a teacher as well as a person. I am so grateful that she has been very passionate and dedicated during this difficult time due to the pandemic – thank you very much and I really look forward to keeping learning with you!

After study at a traditional english school I decided to find an alternative that would better suit my needs. I was looking for a native teacher, with a deep knowledge of English, it was then when I found JoAnne.

JoAnne is a great teacher for all levels! I started to have classes with her when my level was intermediate and immediately she identified where I was struggling and helped me to become more confident.

Although the 1-1 lessons are quite intense and you have to prepare yourself before the classes, Joo makes things much easier. She is super positive and encouraging teacher, focusing on your strengths and at the same time making sure you’re being challenged.

If you, like me, are struggling to learn english, independent of your goal (work, IELTs, communication) I highly recommend her.

Interview with JoAnne

QUESTION 01 | 08
1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
JoAnne — I was born and raised in London so English this is my native tongue. However, I first started teaching it back in 2002, when I moved to Uruguay and started teaching ESL in a bilingual private school there called Colegio Ingles. This is where I learnt to speak my second language, Spanish.
QUESTION 02 | 08
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
JoAnne — Apart from our Queen who speaks what we call the Queen's English and is truly emblematic, nonetheless, it is a rather unnatural way for most English people to speak and it would be wrong of me to choose just one character who could represent English, as it is spoken with many an accent in England and globally.
QUESTION 03 | 08
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
JoAnne — One word or phrase, in English that I particularly like, no, there are just so many. I do however, love learning new vocabulary and also teaching them to be reproduced, this in turn becomes a hidden power. so I have chosen this quote to back up what I feel about vocabulary:- "The more words you know, the more clearly and powerfully you will think ... and the more ideas you will invite into your mind." - Wilfred Funk
QUESTION 04 | 08
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
JoAnne — Speaking languages in general matter to me, as this world becomes smaller for us and the chances to connect with businesses worldwide and travel have become more facilitated, English is becoming the Lingua Franca in this evolving world. So, it would be great if we could all communicate and understand one and other's similarities and differences and understand why, as this will put an end to xenophobia and will promote understanding and acceptance of each other's cultures.
QUESTION 05 | 08
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
JoAnne — The main difficulty to learning English is the exceptions to the rules and there are so many of them. We have a multitude of phrases, a myriad of phrasal verbs and don't even get me started on the dreaded "P" word, prepositions. Spelling is also particularly challenging too. I think to be given the opportunity to explore what you truly need to learn and have each class tailor-made to suit your needs will aid in the learning process, and to work with natural production of the language.
QUESTION 06 | 08
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
JoAnne — In high school I became aware that when I read aloud, I would put words in that weren't there, and miss whole lines and sentences. This was a truly embarrassing time for me as I excelled in all subjects, including English but just couldn't read out loud. I became rebellious in my English classes to avoid being chosen to read aloud, and felt that my teachers didn't deserve that rebellion. But life always teaches you lessons and some 22 years after my school days, I became a teacher, not only working with rebellious students like myself at their age, but also had to read out loud to the class. This took a lot of breathing exercises and slowing down of my brain so I kept in line with what I was reading. Little did I know that my condition was none other than one form of dyslexia, of which not a lot was known in my days, and now of course it is. So at the age of 36 I was able to overcome my dyslexia, what is more I can recognise it in others, which in turn has given me the ability to help and encourage students specific needs with reading.
QUESTION 07 | 08
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
JoAnne — Moving to Uruguay first threw me in the path of teaching languages as a second language. It was here that I trained for this role, qualified, put into practise, made lots of mistakes and learnt from them. I learnt about Spanish Language interference and noted the common mistakes people made. Although I must say that it was on moving back to my homeland and requalifying and studying for other types of teaching that I was really able to see patterns in cultures and other languages that had profound effects on their spoken and written English. I have since learned to teach a variety of English Language skills, such as GCSE, Writing skills, ESL, Literacy for teens and adults, personal statements for university, curriculum writing, TOEFL, Cambridge assessment exams, and the most popular of all my subjects taught, IELTS. This is being globally to amazing people and yes, they learn from me and I learn a lot from them too.
QUESTION 08 | 08
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
JoAnne — It would be hard for me to say I am a SUPERPROF because it doesn't reflect the humble and modest person that I truly am. I would say that I have 21 years of experience, I tailor all classes to suit the student, I am empathetic, patient and kind and my results in exams speak louder than words, and so do the testimonies, reviews and recommendations I have with Superprof website.
