About the lesson
My name is James Atashroo, I am a freelance brass musician and teacher based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach all the valved brass instruments, specialising on trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. I also teach piano, bass guitar and musical theory.
I frequently play in a variety of styles so I am at home teaching classical, jazz, or more popular styles.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from Sheffield University with a bachelors (Hons) in music in 2010 and finished a postgraduate degree in the same subject in 2012. My masters course focused on solo performance and research, culminating in an assessed solo performance, and a 20,000 word thesis examining trumpet technique. This masters degree has been invaluable to my teaching, giving me a deeper understand and knowledge base to draw from.
I have done many of the graded exams for trumpet and piano, reaching grade 8 in 2005.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £25 for hour lessons and £15 for half-hour lessons. An additional fee would be charged if I had to travel outside of Sheffield.
I am willing to teach group lessons at a reduced rate.
First lesson is ALWAYS free.
- Where do you teach?
I normally teach at home, in Crookes, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Depending on the distance however, I am willing to travel to a students' house.
- When are you available?
I am quite flexible in terms of availability, during the day or early evening are both fine.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach any age and experience; whether you are an experienced player looking to improve specific aspects of your playing, or a complete beginner!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I will aim to tailor my teaching to you, the pupil, so that together we can work to achieve your goals. Having been through the ABRSM grading system I am well versed on how to prepare for these exams, both classical and jazz.

About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have gained vast orchestral experience from playing in university orchestras. I lead the trumpet sections of both the wind and symphony orchestras during my final year of university. I also play jazz, both in a big band, and small ensemble setting and have taken part in a number of competitions. I held the lead trumpet position in the Sheffield University Jazz Orchestra for a number of years, and whilst at university led my own small jazz ensemble playing regular function gigs.
Since leaving university I now pursue music professionally, and have gained even more experience of working in the industry both as a performer and a composer. I regularly perform up and down the country with various ensembles, and also regularly perform internationally.
I have been playing on the Sheffield music scene for a number of years as well and have had the privilege of playing regularly with many bands in the area, including the Renegade Brass Band, Jungle Lion, the Dale Storr New Orleans Big Band and many more.
I have been teaching since I started university in 2007. I began by working part time for a local music service, this has now branched out to private tuition.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I hold an up-to-date DBS disclosure certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
At school I was taught by Hugh Davies, freelance trumpet player based in London.
Whilst at university I was taught by Ken Brown, who holds the 2nd trumpet chair of the Halle Orchestra.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My students are of all ages and all abilities. To describe a few:
I have an eleven year student who has is preparing for his grade 3 trumpet exam. I have a couple of very young pupils who I am teaching basic piano technique and music reading skills. I have a 19 year old student who has been playing for years and wishes to continue having lessons whilst at university. I also teach older students, two of which are interested in learning how to play jazz and improvise effectively.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I was a complete beginner when I first met James, and I would highly recommend him as a teacher. He is excellent at explaining the techniques of playing and makes sure that I understand things before moving on. He has a variety of alternate explanations to suit everyone and is supportive in his teaching method. I feel safe that he will correct my technique straight away if I seem to be picking up bad habits. James is professional, enthusiastic, punctual and talented trumpet teacher.
James has been teaching our 12 year old son privately for a couple of years now. In that time he has helped his progress and confidence immensely. James has a relaxed and friendly manner of teaching which has helped Tom learn, and means that he enjoys his lessons.
My son Luke age 11 has been taught by James for 7 months and has got him through his first trumpet exam, which was grade 3. James has a relaxed gentle teaching style, which is lovely, but gets results! He has now also started to teach my 8 year old the cornet. I would recommend him as a brass teacher.
