James - Ealing Common - Music Theory

Methodology

Hello budding musicians!

Music is such an expressive, life-affirming subject and I believe it should play a part in everyone's life. I couldn't urge you more to get involved with music in some capacity. Go on, give it a go!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Clarinet, Recorder and Music Theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold the following qualifications:

Masters in Performance (MPerf Distinction) - Royal College of Music
Bachelor of Music (BMus Hons) - Royal College of Music
DipABRSM - Diploma in Music Performance (Distinction)
ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction - Saxophone
ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction - Clarinet
ABRSM Grade 6 Music Theory
ABRSM Grade 6 Piano

- How much do you charge?

£35 for an hour
£30 for 45 minutes
£20 for half an hour

- Where do you teach?

I teach primarily in my music room (in my flat 30 seconds from Ealing Common Tube) but am also happy to come to your home to teach you.

I own a beautiful Vespa Scooter so travel around London is perhaps easier for me than for others. Although based in Ealing I am happy to consider teaching anyone in the greater London area.

- When are you available?

I appreciate that it is difficult to fit music lessons around busy work or school schedules, so I try and be as flexible as possible with lesson times.

Whether you are looking for a lesson at the weekend, in the middle of a weekday, or after school or work i am confident that i will be able to accommodate you. Get in contact and I'll see what i can do!

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Music tuition should be open to everyone, so I am happy to teach all ages and standards.

The youngest student i've ever had was 6 years old, and the oldest (although still young at heart!) 65. I'm very comfortable teaching students of any age, from any demographic. Likewise I'm happy teaching to any standard. I am very experienced in teaching absolute beginners, whilst being equally at home in teaching the grade 8+ side of the spectrum.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I'm happy to tailor lessons for your individual needs.

This can include preparation for ABRSM exam (or any other exam board) grades, Music college auditions, Recitals, school concerts, orchestral projects, literally anything!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

Over the past eight years I have taught a variety of students from all walks of life. Working as Head of Woodwind at the Westminster Saturday centre for young musicians (2008-2009) gave me an opportunity to shape the musical landscapes of many children who were experiencing classical music for the first time. My extensive work at Bousfield Primary School and Questor's young musicians club has helped me to develop vital personal skills for teaching young students. My private teaching career has kept me in touch with those outside of education, who often prove to be the most promising students.

The strength of my teaching comes from my strong performance background and my passion to help each student develop at their own pace. I have performed with orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In addition I have frequently performed on radio and in many leading concert halls across the United Kingdom.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I hold various valid Enhanced CRB Disclosure Certificates, including one from the City of Westminster Council.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have studied with the following clarinetists: Tim Lines (ex principal Clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra), Bob Hill (principal clarinet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra) Janet Hilton (Head of Woodwind at the RCM) Richard Hosford (Principal clarinet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and Michael Harris (Bass Clarinet of the Philharmonia for over 30 years). I have also participated in masterclasses with Wenzel Fuchs (Principal clarinet, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), Michael Whight (Principal clarinet, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and Mark Van De Wiel (Philharmonia and London Sinfonietta.)

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

The Royal College of Music, Incorporated Society of Musicians
