Jamie Louise - Old Street - Music Theory

Methodology

I am currently a final year Bmus(Hons) student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and am also working as a freelance musician and teacher around London. I really enjoy teaching students of all ages and stages!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I give lessons in piano, recorder, music theory and bassoon. I usually tutor my students individually, but also offer to teach small groups.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I'm currently in my final year as an undergraduate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I will complete the course in Classical Bassoon and receive a Bmus(Hons) degree. Prior to my Guildhall studies, I achieved distinction in both ABRSM Grade 8 bassoon and piano, distinction in ABRSM Grade 5 theory and an A in Advanced Higher Music (the Scottish equivalent of A-Level).

- How much do you charge?

My standard rates are:

Bassoon - £25 p/h
Piano - £25 p/h
Recorder - £25 p/h
Music Theory - £20 p/h

However I do offer 30-minute and 45-minute lessons (which generally suits younger pupils better!) and so rates are negotiable according to lesson duration, number of pupils and travel expenses. I'm also happy to offer consultation lessons at a discounted price.

- Where do you teach?

I generally travel to teach at students' homes. I am currently based in the Barbican area (EC1), but am happy to travel anywhere within zones 1-3 (although this is also negotiable!).

- When are you available?

My availability is very flexible - weekdays, evenings and weekends are all possible options for me to teach my students, and so there is generally never a problem finding a convenient time for lessons.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach bassoon at all levels, from beginners to advanced, and piano from beginners to Grade 8 level.
I teach recorder from beginners to an intermediate level.
I tutor Music Theory to Grade 5 level, which is the level students are required to pass in order to take ABRSM instrumental exams Grade 6+.

I am happy to tutor students of all ages, from very young children to adults.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for ABRSM/Trinity Guildhall exams, as well as music college and orchestral auditions. However I'm also happy to teach those who just want to play for fun!

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Please feel free to contact me for any more information about myself, learning bassoon/recorder/piano/music theory or if you have any questions about lessons with me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have worked with children in musical workshop environments as part of school outreach projects, and also assisted in coaching young wind players at the RCS (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) when I lived in Glasgow, prior to my Guildhall studies. I have been lucky enough to perform in prestigious venues around the country as an orchestral bassoonist, the London venues including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall. Prior to my Guildhall studies, I was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, of which I was Principal bassoon in my final year. I regularly play with various orchestras including the Guildhall School Symphony Orchestra, YMSO, Aeolian Orchestra, and London Shostakovich Orchestra, as well as the Arabesque Wind Quintet.

As a former joint-principal study pianist, I have given both solo and chamber recitals at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I regularly accompany my fellow music students.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I am currently a final year undergraduate bassoon student on the Bmus(Hons) course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Meyrick Alexander (RWCMD), Miriam Gussek (ROH) and Dan Jemison (ENO).

I previously studied at the Music School of Douglas Academy, Glasgow, where I received extensive tuition in bassoon, piano and music theory, as well as other aspects of musicianship, and was winner of the Music Trophy Prize and the Dux in my final year. I studied bassoon with David Hubbard (RSNO), and piano with Anne Scott.
