Hello, I am sensitive and understanding teacher of many years experience welcoming all ages and standards - beginners to advanced students; children to adult beginners and returners.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Classical Piano, Singing & Music Theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I held a vocal scholarship at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, before studying for an academic degree in English & European Literature at the University of Essex. I then returned to the same University and studied for a BA Hons in Music, specialising in piano performance, graduating with a first class honours degree in 2007.
- How much do you charge?
All potential students are offered a free no-obligation consultation session; thereafter tuition is offered at a rate of £25 per hour, £12.50 per half hour lesson.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home studio on a beautiful handcrafted Yamaha grand piano in a recently refurbished well equipped music studio with ideal singing acoustics. My home is located in the small Cambridegshire village of Ramsey Mereside which is easily accessible from the surrounding towns of Ramsey, Huntingdon, Chatteris, Whittlesea and Peterborough. I regret that I am unable to travel to students' homes for private lessons.
- When are you available?
I am available to teach throughout the daytime six days a week (Monday to Saturday inclusive) and every evening of the week up until 7pm. On Mondays and Tuesdays I am happy to offer much later scheduled lessons until 10pm at night, but please don't hesitate to contact me if you have a specific time requirement - I do still have room for flexibility on these times.
I am also happy to continue teaching throughout school holidays and half terms if required.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels - from very young children to adult beginners and returners. I tailor make my lesson plans to suit individual students and am happy to provide formal instruction throughout the ABRSM grades as well as those of other examination boards, but I am also equally happy to teach those students who merely wish to have a pleasurable hobby. In recent years, I have spent much time helping adult students returning to the piano after a long break.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare students for all the main examination board grades.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe each student to be an individual and therefore I tailor my teaching in consultation with each student to meet their own particular aims and objectives. I am therefore extremely flexible in my approach to teaching and I am equally at home both in preparing students for examinations, or enabling students to enjoy the pleasure of music making as a hobby.
- What kind of experience do you have?
During the course of my BA Honours degree in music, I undertook modules specifically relating to instrumental and vocal teaching practice alongside the performance modules which formed the basis of my final degree. During the course of my degree studies, I took on a number of private students varying widely in age and ability, teaching at home. Towards the end of my degree studies, I secured a peripatetic teaching post based largely at Colchester High School where I taught both classical piano and voice and assisted in extra curricular music productions. Following my relocation to Epping, Essex in 2009, I built up a considerable private teaching practice where I taught all ages and abilities from small children to adults returning to the piano after several years. In particular, I havre a 100% pass rate in ABRSM examinations, with my students frequently enjoying distinction passes.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
My most recent CRB check took place in 2008 at Colchester High School and was a full disclosure. Please note that under current legislation, it is not possible for a self-employed individual to obtain a CRB check as these have to be applied for by an employer, however, I am more than happy to provide references upon request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied voice with Maureen Guy & John Mitchison at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and later with Ian Ray at Colchester Institute Centre for Music & Performance Arts. I also received considerable guidance from Richard Cooke through my involvement with the University of Essex Choir and the Royal Choral Society.
I studied piano with the Australian pianist, Lesley Young at the Centre for Music & Performance Arts, Colchester Institute where I also took part in a masterclass with Alexander Ardakov.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Having recently relocated to the Peterborough area, I have been fortunate enough to have been able to continue teaching two adult students from my Epping practice at my new home. These are two more advanced students working towards ARSM grade 8 and on Trinity Guildhall ATCLdiploma reprtoire.
I am currently teaching a small number of singing students both classical and music theatre repertoire with a view to entering for ABRSM graded exams in the near future. I also have a small number of students who come on an infrequent consultationbasis when they have professional singing engagements to prepare for.
