My ethos is to encourage young people to enjoy maths and, by doing so, help them to achieve their full potential in exams, whether KS3, GCSE or QTS
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
KS3 Maths, GCSE Maths, QTS Maths
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a professionally qualified accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per hourly session. Whilst I prefer to teach from home, I am prepared to travel to your home for free if it is within a 6 mile radius, otherwise I will charge 40p per mile. Group sessions are negotiable, depending on the number of students.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home predominantly, but I can also travel to a student's home within a reasonable distance. I live in South Godstone in Surrey, so I can cover a 10 mile radius from there. If students live further than that, I do have the option of offering personal tuition via the internet, using Skype, providing the student has a reliable internet connection.
- When are you available?
I am available from 4pm-7pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, 10am-7pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 10am-1pm on Fridays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach KS3, GCSE and QTS.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE and QTS
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can provide personal tuition via the internet using Skype and IDroo, an educational whiteboard, providing the student has a reliable internet connection. It is possible to share documents and show methods of working out problems as if we were in the same room.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I want to encourage students to enjoy the challenge of problem solving and not see the subject as something to fear. Too many young people believe that maths is not for them, that it is something they can't grasp. In fact, the problem is rarely related to ability. Frequently the issue lies in a lack of self-confidence, which can be dealt with through tried and tested teaching methods and a patient and encouraging approach. Students build their confidence through clear steps in learning and strategies which they can apply. As the student gains confidence they will begin to enjoy problem solving, and this, in turn, increases the student's ability to tackle more difficult questions, resulting in a confident approach to exams.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have tutored maths at KS3 and GCSE level for 20 years. I have extensive experience in tutoring university students in QTS maths.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Testimonials from recent students:
"I was losing confidence in my ability to pass GCSE, after failing with grade D. I needed individual help and found Jeff's way of teaching made sense of some of the topics I had struggled with. He was always patient and showed me clear ways of how to approach the questions. Lots of repetition and practice built my confidence and speeded up my problem solving. I passed the resit with a grade B."
"I failed my first attempt at the QTS Numeracy test in January, despite having a GCSE grade C. I took the test for the second time in July, following intensive tuition from Jeff, and I'm delighted and relieved to say I passed. He understands the format and demands of the test and showed me a range of strategies to solve problems quickly. His patient, confidence-building approach was a key factor in improving my skills through practice clearly targeted at the QTS test, and I'm now an NQT teacher."
"Jeff tutored me privately for professional accountancy exams and was extremely knowledgeable about his subject. We quickly established a good working relationship, and he provided clear explanations, with endless patience, a helpful manner and an obvious passion for his subject."
Jeff helped my daughter to an unexpected A* in maths GCSE and now teaching her younger brother. He is a great teacher and very patient, as well as reliable and punctual. I would definitely recommend him.
Jeff is very reliable and professional in his approach. He helped my daughter with her maths tuition for her GCSEs and we would thoroughly recommend him for any future tuition. Jeff is also very flexible and a really likeable person. We had full confidence with his teaching skills.
He is very patient with how you learn and understands different ways of learning and adapts his teaching to help you understand. You get so much out of Jeff. Jeff has an extensive amount of knowledge within GCSE and the maths skills test.
