About the lesson
I'm an enthusiastic English graduate and musician with experience in instrumental and academic teaching for all ages. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss lessons!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical singing to Diploma level and piano to Grade 8, and am happy to help students prepare for music scholarships and auditions. I also offer English tuition at all levels.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from Girton College, Cambridge with a degree in English in 2006, and also hold a Master's degree in Shakespearean Studies at King's College London. I gained an ATCL Diploma in piano performance at the age of fourteen and am currently a postgraduate vocal student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
- How much do you charge?
I charge between £20 and £30 per hour, depending on subject (plus up to £5 for travel). I'm willing to negotiate discounts for teaching more than one student at the same time or under the same roof.
- Where do you teach?
I am based in the centre of Cardiff and am happy to teach at home or to travel to students' homes.
- When are you available?
I am fairly flexible and happy to teach most days, including weekends and weekday evenings.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages. The levels are as outlined above.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
For English, I'm happy to help students through school examinations (GCSE and A Level particularly), as well as preparing them for university interviews. For piano and singing I can help pupils prepare for graded examinations, but am equally happy to teach those who prefer to learn just for fun.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I have Skype (with webcam) and am also happy to carry out correspondence tuition via email.

About Jen
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience in both academic and instrumental tuition. As a professional singer, I perform regularly with international consort Tenebrae and with renowned London choirs including St Brides, Fleet Street and All Saint's Margaret Street. My opera roles include Tytania (A Midsummer Night's Dream), First Boy (The Magic Flute), Iris (Semele), and the Countess (Figaro.) In 2010 I set up Opera Links, where school pupils can join a professional cast of singers, coach and repetiteur to perform in an opera, as well as receiving individual vocal coaching.
I also work as a freelance writer and editor for Realworld magazine, Push.co.uk (an online resource for students) and Cancer Research UK. Besides my degrees, I have experience teaching students of all levels, from KS2 to A2 and degree level.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I don't have a CRB disclosure certificate as the lessons I give are privately arranged rather than through an organisation who would usually carry out these checks.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I currently study singing at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. In the past I have studied singing with Philip Doghan (Royal Academy of Music), and piano with Kevin Smith (Eton College).
