Joshua - Music Theory

Methodology

My name is Joshua Batty and I am studying at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute and piccolo, piano and French speaking, writing, reading and listening up to GCSE standard.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am post grade 8 and diploma standard on flute and have attained grade 8 flute with distinction and am currently undergoing a performance degree at the Royal Academy (BMus) on full scholarship. I have grade A*s at GCSE level and grade A's in A level French and music.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £25 / hour on flute and piccolo and I am very prepared to travel but at a potential extra cost to cover expenses. Consultation lessons will be £20 for an hour. For group sessions i charge £35/hour.

- Where do you teach?

I am able to teach in and around Westminster and am prepared to travel outside (across London) with a small extra cost to cover travel. My closest tube station is Kings Cross. I am also prepared to teach in Oxford/Reading but only on the weekends and this will be £40 per hour to cover the travel cost.

- When are you available?

I am flexible throughout the week and weekends and like to prearrange with my pupils to fit both our schedules best.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

On flute/piano/piccolo I am happy to teach complete beginners to advanced amateurs (grade 8/diploma).

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I would prepare my students for whatever qualifications the wish to work towards but I believe the ABRSM graded system to be a very good place to start.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have in the past given lessons over Skype and am prepared to do this if needs be.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am a keen and passionate musician and teacher who really looks forward to hearing players of all ages and standards and bringing the best out of my pupils.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a freelance musician I have guested as both principal and second flute with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and second flute with the London Symphony Orchestra and Bath Philharmonia. I was fortunate to be accepted into the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester 2012 with whom I toured around Europe performing in festivals such as Lucerne, Salzburg, Royal Concertgebouw, Edinburgh, BBC Proms, Dresden and Frankfurt festivals. For six years I was to fortunate to study at Chethams School of Music and in my final two years I was accepted into the National Youth Orchestra GB where is was second flute and then principal flute. Whilst I was at Chethams I also studied piano as my second study instrument and am therefore happy to teach from beginner standard to grade 8 (ABRSM). I have experience teaching a range of standards from complete beginners to more advanced players. Alongside the flute, I have also taught French and Piano for the past 4 years and am therefore experienced preparing students for exams; for French, levels from key stage 1 up until GCSE.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I do not currently have a CRB.

- Where and with whom did you train?

On the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester tour, we were coached by Bernhard Heinrichs from the Zurich Opera House. Whilst I was at Chethams I studied with Gitte Marcusson, Richard Davis, Katherine Baker and Linda Verrier and am currently studying with Michael Cox on flute and Helen Keene on piccolo at the Royal Academy of Music. I also trained on 6 National Youth Orchestra courses with Sarah Newbold, Andrew Nicholson and Laura Jellicoe.
