Hi there! I graduated Teesside University with a 2:2 Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and News Practice. This covered all aspects of multimedia Journalism including Social Media/Online, Print Journalism, Video Journalism and reporting and Radio Presenting and producing.
I am DBS checked (I have certification as proof).
I can offer to tutor children from the ages of 5 to 11 years of age.
Children learn Literacy and Language through exploration. Within the Primary school age group, children's reading and writing vary greatly. Some children are able to read and write with ease and with considerable fluency.
Other children need the one-on-one attention of a tutor to help develop an understanding of basic concepts, gain confidence, build specific skills and find the motivation to read and write.
Below are some tutoring strategies for your child, including:
Reading together - this is to help promote your child's reading skills. This does not, however, replace independent reading or reading aloud.
Helping children develop decoding strategies - these are basic strategies to help break down new words so your child can better understand them and learn how to break it down. For example; this strategy looks at the meaning of the word, putting sounds to words, how the word is formed and also the recognition of sight words using flashcards.
Helping children understand what they read - This is important as children's vocabularies increase and they then take more meaning from text. I will encourage your child to talk about what they have read, pointing out new words and explaining their meaning all to help your child understand what they are reading.
Helping children become engaged writers - Reading and writing are two language skills that are closely connected. As children become more skilled at reading, they also improve their writing skills. Both help the child with spelling, word recognition, and memory.
I have been giving lessons on-and-off for a number of years. I first started when my young brother was struggling with his spelling, I then discovered he found it hard to read his school books. Working with him he then developed the confidence to excel in his class and received certification and won 1st prize in his class for his handwriting and spelling.
Since then as a pre-teen, I babysat for family friends and also helped with their homework, which of course included reading and working through their workbooks. I had comments from such parents thanking me for the improvement of their child's education and for giving them the motivation and encouragement they needed to do well.
