I am a mature, qualified and experienced IELTS teacher and examiner.. I also have many years' experience in teaching Academic, Business and General English, and examination skills.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
IELTS and all the Cambridge exams for Speakers of Other Languages, and general English as a Foreign Language. Besides teaching overseas students, I have also prepared many native English speakers who needed a high score in IELTS as part of their visa requirements for emigration to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries.
I lived in Spain for many years, and I am totally fluent in Spanish, so I also teach Spanish conversation and grammar using the same methods as in my English teaching.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from London University in 1970 with a B.A. (Hons) in French and English. In 2004 I gained my CELTA from International House in London and became a full-time English teacher, specialising since then in IELTS. Since 2009 I have been an IELTS examiner (Speaking and Writing).
- How much do you charge?
I offer new students a free face-to-face consultation, to assess their needs and abilities. Once we have met, I can recommend the number of hours he/she should undertake; the general rule for IELTS can be from 2 to 10 hours per week, depending on their exam deadline, initial level and their willingness to self-study in their own time. IELTS classes are £45 per hour, minimum 2 hours (£90). Other classes range from £30 to £35 per hour. Classes may be paid in cash or by bank transfer, and I ask students to give me at least 24 hours prior notice if they have to cancel a class without paying for it. Blocks of hours can be booked and paid for in advance, at reduced price - please ask me for details.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Putney, SW15. The nearest tube station is East Putney, on the District Line. I am also within easy distance from Clapham Junction and Putney railway stations, and several bus routes stop near my house.
- When are you available?
I am flexible on days and times, as this is agreed individually with each student.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Over 18s, all levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
IELTS, Cambridge Proficiency, Advanced, First Certificate, PET, KET and BEC. Also the Pearson computer-based Academic English test.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I prefer not to tutor on-line, as IELTS is a traditional paper-based exam, and in my opinion any tuition should be done in person. However, once a student has been with me for some time and just needs practice rather than intensive tuition, I am happy to give practice Speaking sessions on Skype and provide a Writing scoring service.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
With my specialist knowledge of the IELTS test, Academic English and exam preparation, I can help you to enter your academic course or achieve professional registration as smoothly as possible with confidence in your language skills. For those needing a certain level of language skills for visa or citizenship purposes, I can help you make sense of the exam skills and performance needed. And a last piece of advice - if you find a tutor you think may suit you, always ask for proof of their qualifications. Recently I have noticed that some tutors are claiming to be official examiners when they are not. A real examiner will be happy to produce proof that they have gone through the rigorous training course and have been 'certificated to examine'. In the case of IELTS, this training has to be repeated every two years. It only takes a moment to ask!
Judith is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have recently retired from full-time teaching, and have now taken up tutoring at home for all the Cambridge qualifications.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
No, not needed for teaching adults.
- Where and with whom did you train?
International House, London Cambridge IELTS/British Council
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Students from every corner of the world, most of whom either wish to work in a professional capacity in the UK, or study at a British university, and therefore need to attain a minimum IELTS score. Others may need it for emigration/immigration abroad or into the UK, or British citizenship. Some students do not wish to take an exam, as they are already living and working here, but simply to improve their command of the language during their stay in this country.
Judith was absolutely great for me! She is a very prepared, competent and high qualified teacher. Moreover she is available, reliable and kind. In order to continue my medical studies and career I need IELTS score of 7.5 in each sections and overall...it was extremely tough but at the end I got it! Thank her (and my hard work) I achieved amazing IELTS results in just a couple of months: reading 9, listening 8, speaking 8 and writing 7,5 with an overall 8! I definitely recommend her!
I got 7.0 overall ! L - 6.5, R - 7.0, W - 6.5, S - 7.0. I can go to LSE to get a Master's in Sociology.
