Every student will be different and as an art tutor, I believe it is most important to establish a rapport and connection with students (especially with younger students) as drawing and painting are subjects that require patience and concentration, thus finding a way to keep students engaged is the key.
Although art is a mostly demonstrative subject to teach, it is important to supplement these skills with theory as it helps with accuracy of drawings and behaves as scaffolding for works that are not done from a reference object/photo.
Starting from basic technical explanations and demonstrations (such as the classic cube task), these simple exercises help with the understandings of how light hits objects and helps to understand the notions of dimensions, size and scale. The next step would be, learning how to apply these exercises to more complicated drawing subject matters and different styles of shading to achieve different qualities to ultimately help “sculpt” a 3D image from a 2D medium.
Although these lessons would be drawing-heavy, I can also give a basic introduction of how to use different types of paints (eg. watercolours/oils) and different methods of painting.
And from this, depending on what each student prefers, I can start to teach how to draw and paint portraits, landscapes, animals, etc. We will work together towards your goals - be it just to improve drawing/painting skills, or the fact that you just want to be able to draw your pony or puppy - to make the classes exciting, engaging and dynamic! We will get there! I don’t bite!

I teach students ages 7-14 and older ages in beginner-intermediate technical drawing techniques, helping to improve and build confidence in their skills. I’m currently studying Fine Art at Newcastle uni, previously I’ve done art GSCEs and A Levels and I currently work with a range of materials including drawing, painting, and film, so I can advise on these subjects as well if needed! Don’t be afraid to ask!
My 15 year-old daughter has started to study with Irene last year. She loves art and thinks of higher education in art and design. My daughter’s art improves and very happy to have Irene as her tutor.
I am 12 years old, studying art with Irene make me a better art student, I mean not only skill but attitude. Irene gives me the view that art also can be fun!!! And she knows when to sprinkle in her humor
Irene is a great tutor because she is organised and loves sharing her passion for art. Would recommend!
as an art student of one of the finest Universities within the UK Irene is nothing but an excellent model of a student and embollishes the true essense of a real artist. Having witnessed her work in her art show, I can say her skills are of an incredible calibour. Irene has an excellent and encoureging persona that will continue to motivate you with positive and contructive critism without feeling bellittled or condescended in any manor. She is open, whole hearted and a good friend. I Hope to see her do well in this endouver as she is nothing more than a hard working and encouraging person.
Wish you all the best,
Lovely person with integrity and very skilled.
I've known Irene for a few years now. She's a very talented artist she has a big heart. She is patient , trustworthy, and amazing communication skills. You would be lucky to have her as your tutor.
I have known Irene for a while now and would like to say that she is a very friendly and understanding person. She is quite logical and good at focusing on areas of improvement. I would definatly recommend her for anyone with a passion for art.
Irene is a very patient and reassuring tutor. She was able to adapt her pacing very well and maintain the joy of the subject, even when things got quite technical. I would definitely recommend her!
Irene is an excellent artist, with a multiplicit approach she is capable of flexibly adapting to any drawing style and providing guidance and support. Her innate interest in history of art, philosophy and literature creates a plethora of possibilities to interpret drawings through the prism of a social commentary, so anyone who chooses Irene as their tutor would certainly benefit from her extensive knowledge and passion for artistic expression.
Excellent artist, knows her stuff.
