Karen Jolliffe - Experienced musician and teacher offering piano lessons in Canterbury, Kent, UK

Methodology

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 8 years' experience, tutoring all ages and abilities, both privately and in schools. I hold a 100% pass rate for ABRSM and Trinity exams, with many students achieving Merit or Distinction.

As an active performer as a soloist and in professional ensembles, I take pride in ensuring my students receive tuition that is stimulating technically and musically, whilst always being enjoyable, constructive and enriching. I teach by demonstration, and encourage students to always listen as well as perform, to develop aural awareness and versatility in their own playing.

I give a realistic and sound outlook on any performances including exam preparation and auditions, or just simply playing for enjoyment.

My experience also extends to leading string workshops for all abilities, as I feel playing in an ensemble is one of the most rewarding and pleasurable aspects of playing a stringed instrument.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I completed my studies with Carmel Kaine. I also received string quartet coaching with Martin Outram of the Maggini Quartet.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Leon String Quartet- (concealed information)

ISM full member

European String Teachers' Association; full member

Background

Welcome to my tutor page. I am a dedicated and experienced musician and teacher, tutoring students of all ages and abilities. I teach violin, viola, piano and music theory.

I am primarily a classical musician, but can also teach folk and jazz elements.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £31/hour for violin/viola/music theory lessons, or £16/30 minutes.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at my own home in central Canterbury. Due to my very busy lesson schedule, I'm generally unable to offer lessons at students' houses, but please do enquire about this if you wish.

- When are you available?

I have limited availability on weekdays, Tuesday – Friday. I tend to teach during school term time, but do offer extra lessons in school holidays on request.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Everyone is welcome - all ages and abilities! My current students range from ages 5 through to 70. I constantly strive to adapt to their many different aspirations. Also, I teach music theory and am willing to incorporate theory/musicianship into lessons for no extra charge.

Auditions, scholarships and recitals.
Orchestral, chamber and ensemble performance practices.

I am happy to answer any questions by email, and also offer music lessons via Skype.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Quite simply, I love playing. Therefore, I feel it is my duty get the best out of my students. Never be afraid to tell me about your personal goals and aspirations. Everyone plays an instrument for a different reason, whether it be taking the exam route for achievement, wanting to play in an ensemble or simply just for the love of music. My job as a teacher is to support you, as well as to help you discover all of the things that make up your own unique musical outlook.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

We were looking for a specialist children's music teacher and were lucky enough to find Karen – she's been teaching our daughter (6) piano and violin for a couple of years and she absolutely loves it. She is very patient and makes the lessons fun and pitched at just the right level for them to progress. She's recently started teaching our son (4) as well and has a fantastic relationship with them both.
