From an early age I was encouraged to study music, and my love of the cello and piano developed through studying with inspirational and dedicated teachers who were enthusiastic about my potential. I seek to replicate this in my teaching.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Cello, Piano and Music Theory. I also coach chamber ensembles.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I attained my Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and then did my post graduate studies for a Kunstlerische Ausbildung in Cello at the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik, Trossingen in Germany. I then attained an Artists Diploma from the Royal College of Music. I have also completed Phase 1 Colourstrings Cello teaching training. This is a method based on Kodaly method. It's a great way to teach children as it incorporates all aspects of music learning from day one.
For Piano I have ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction and ABRSM Theory up to grade 8 with Distinction.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £45 per hour but this is reduced to £40 pounds and hour if you come to me. I also offer one free consultation lesson so that you can try out my teaching style to see if it suits your needs.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Brentford. I am able to travel to homes around Hounslow and Ealing.
- When are you available?
I am available throughout the week and on weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from age 4. It is great to start from an early age learning musicianship so that when the child is ready to learn an instrument they already have an understanding of tonality and rhythm. I find that doing it this way means that the pupil progresses more quickly and with a better understanding and real enjoyment of what they are learning. As I am also a professional performer I am comfortable teaching from beginner all the way through to Diploma level.
I also think that it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. As well as enjoyment learning an instrument later in life is a great way of maintaining finger dexterity and coordination.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for ABRSM exams or just for fun. It's up to the students. I think exams can be a great source of motivation but it is also important to focus on teaching the musician not just learning an instrument. Every child deserves to have the best education.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I think it's really important that as a learner of an instrument you have faith in your abilities and that they are fostered. Learning an instrument can be a great way of finding a new way to express yourself. I think it's so important that you learn independence and have your own point of view when performing. The most important thing is that you have fun with it!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over 14 years experience in teaching both piano and cello. I have taught from ages 4-62. I have experience in group teaching, such as running workshops and coaching ensembles, as well as teaching individuals. I work in a school as well as teaching privately. Working in a school environment means my teaching is frequently observed and maintained to the highest standards. I mostly work with young children and teenagers but also enjoy working with older pupils.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date DBS.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I am originally from New Zealand so I studied in Christchurch first, getting my Bachelors in Music (Cello Performance). I then moved to Germany to continue my studies at the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik, Trossingen. I then moved to London to take part in the training orchestra Southbank Sinfonia. I also studied at the Royal College of Music and attained an Artists Diploma. I have also done my Phase 1 Colourstrings Cello Training with Csaba Szilvay. I am now based in London working as a freelance musician and music teacher.
