Katy - East Grinstead - Violin

Methodology

I love to teach. I find it a very natural thing to do when you have studied an instrument to a professional level and when you have a passion for playing it yourself.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the double bass, the violin and music theory as part of my varied career as a musician. My focus is mostly on classical training but I like to cover many other genres including pop, film, jazz and folk. The double bass and the violin are both wonderfully versatile instruments so I try to reflect that in my teaching by using a wide range of influences. I teach music theory according to the ABRSM syllabus up to grade 5 as a valuable supporting subject to any instrumentalist, especially those looking to take their playing beyond grade 5 with ABRSM where grade 5 theory is a prerequisite.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a BMus (Hons) degree and an LRAM (double bass teaching) qualification, both awarded from the Royal Academy of Music in June 2011.

- How much do you charge?

£17.50 per 30 minutes
£25 per 45 minutes
£30 per hour

- Where do you teach?

I live in East Grinstead, West Sussex but I always travel to my pupils as it is not possible for me to teach from home. Other areas that I can travel to are Lingfield, Oxted and Warlingham in Surrey, Forest Row in East Sussex, Crawley and surrounding areas in West Sussex and all over Croydon.

- When are you available?

Depending on where you are situated, I have some after school and evening space available as well as the possibility of weekends. I am always happy and willing to give lessons throughout school holidays too. My most available time is during the day.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I currently teach from age 7 to adult but depending on the size of the individual child, I could start someone as young as 5 on the double bass and 2 on the violin.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students to take practical exams in grades 1-8 on the double bass and in grades 1-5 on the violin and with music theory. I consider both the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall syllabuses, depending on what suits the individual student best.

When it comes to taking practical grade exams, I think they are a fantastic tool for some pupils to have something to work towards and for them to see their improvement as they climb though the grades but I realise that they are not for everyone so I only put someone forwards for an exam if they want to and if I think that it's the best way for them to progress.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught privately for many years with students that are of primary school age, teenagers and adults. I also work as a coach for youth orchestras, delivering sectional rehearsals to young instrumentalists. The LRAM qualification gave me in-depth and very specific training in teaching an instrument which has helped me to give tuition of even greater quality.

As well as teaching I have been involved in outreach work, delivering music education workshops to a wide variety of participants. I received training in this area of work at the Royal Academy of Music where I was given the chance to play supporting roles in workshops with some of the leading professionals in the field as well as the chance to design and lead my own workshops. Doing this sort of education work has really rubbed off on my teaching - it gives me plenty of new ideas to bring to students lessons and it keeps my approach to learning fresh. Most recently I did a series of education workshops in schools and coached an amateur orchestra in Mumbai, India.

I have performed on the double bass extensively and I am constantly continuing to do so as an active professional. This is mostly as an orchestral double bassist and I have played under the baton of conductors including Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Leif Segerstam, Mark Elder and Yan Pascal Tortelier and with ensembles such as English National Opera, the Royal Ballet, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. I also play the baroque double bass which I like as an alternative to the big symphonic music that I most often play. I strongly believe in the importance of a teacher of music performing regularly as it helps to maintain enthusiasm and a love of their instrument but at the same time, I find that teaching keeps me enthusiastic about playing because I can see how rewarding it is for my students to be learning.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Duncan McTier and Graham Mitchell as my professors. I also studied baroque bass with Chi-chi Nwanoku. I took the LRAM qualification whilst there, with Rodney Stewart as my tutor, to get very specific tuition on teaching instruments. Violin is my second study instrument, having been taught by Angela Bonetti.
