About the lesson
All ages, abilities and locations in London are very welcome!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Clarinet (jazz or classical), Saxophone, Recorder and Music Theory (grades 1-5).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA in music performance from the Royal Academy of Music, a BMus Hons from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also Grade 8 distinction on the clarinet.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 for the hour and £23 for half an hour if I am required to travel to your house, but my rates are lower if you are able to come to me.
- Where do you teach?
I teach all over really! Currently I have private students in Angel, Tuffnell Park, Warwick Avenue, Bethnal Green and London Fields. I am very happy to come to your house as this is usually how it works and my students tend to feel more comfortable with this. I also teach at a private school in St John's Wood once a week, so I am willing to travel to most places
- When are you available?
I can offer afternoons (from Tuesday to Friday, and Sunday) and evenings (all week),
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach anyone who wants to learn.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am very familiar with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, so I tend to use this examining board when preparing students for their exams. I don't however expect my students to take exams, but I do encourage it as it helps to have a goal.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Whether you are learning just for fun, or thinking more seriously about your goals as a musician, having a good working relationship with your teacher is essential to enjoying what you do and your improvment as an instrumentalist.

About Katy
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching privately and in schools for the past 5 years, and have experience with one-to-one (adults and children) as well as large groups of children.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do have an up-to-date CRB certificate..
- Where and with whom did you train?
For four years I studied at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama for my BMus Hons (my principal instrument is clarinet) and my teachers were Barnaby Robson (Co-principal clarinettist of the Philharmonia Orchestra), Andrew Webster (principal clarinettist of Glyndebourne Touring Opera and highly successful free-lance musician), Joy Farall (Principal clarinettist in Britten Sinfonia) and Laurent Ben Slimane (Principal Bass-Clarinet of Philharmonia Orchestra).
I then went on to study for my Masters in performance at the Royal Academy of Music where I learnt with Mark van de Wiel (Co-Principal clarinettist of the Philharmonia Orchestra) and Angela Malsbury (Principal Clarinettist in London Mozart Players).
I feel I have had some of the best training Europe has to offer, and I would like to think I have absorbed some of the knowledge that my teachers offered me during my studies.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a vast range of ages within my students which is great, as I get to teach people and experience different aims with their playing. One of my younger pupils has just done her grade 3 clarinet and gained a high Merit, and another scored similarly with her grade 1 exam, after only playing for a year. They are all a pleasure to teach, hard working and they seem to enjoy our lessons and ask lots of questions which is something I encourage a lot with my teaching.
